Thread: 202 running temp and oil pressure

Sounds like your temp gauge is not working properly or the engine would be cooked by now. It should run between low 80's to low 90's depending on ambient temp and load. If you know someone with an infrared non contact thermometer, you can check this to see what it is actually running at. Is the temp gauge electric or mechanical? If it's electric, you may have the wrong sender, or some crook wiring.

Oil pressure on these can get low as the oil pump wears and the clearances open up. A new pump is a worthwhile investment and easy to do. Again, check to make sure your gauge is installed properly and you actually have low oil pressure.

it's mechanical, think one of the repco/supercheap jobs.

cool, I'll have a look at changing the pump.

can you also test the thermometer via putting the sender in boiling water, that's how I've tested thermostats in the past. to make sure they were opening.

ok, numpty moment..

it is a Fahrenheit gauge, which I noticed having a proper look, so this means it's running around 50c, then goes up to 82c when stopped on a big run... still doesn't sound right though.

one of my bmws used to run at 100-110 normal operating temp.

Workshop manual says oil pressure hot is 45 psi. Thermostat starts to open 177 degrees F. and fully open 202 degrees F. Radiator cap is 13psi.

Ah, ok, that sounds better. It sounds like it the thermostat may be stuffed if it's not heating up until loaded. I'd just bang a new one in - for the price, I wouldn't worry too much about testing it.

If you have no A/C,and not an auto,the four blade fan should be fine,unless the rad needs a good roding,or the fins are badly corroded.

Also do you have the correct grade engine oil,as this could affect the oil pressure,although i bet the pump is worn.

Yep thermometer bulb in boiling water will give you a good indication of it's calibration.

ill grab a new thermostat tomorrow, i see the recommended tridon one is the same as a landrover unit. anyone used the tt2000-180?
30% more coolant flow than oem style?

10psi oil pressure at a hot idle is fine. It would want to be at 35psi or above when at 2000rpm though.
