    Gear ID

    Hi guys,
I was told when I bought my Series 3 SWB that it still had a series 3 gearbox in it still. However driving it around before taking off the road I had my doubts.... I didn't seem to had synchro in 1&2.

here's a pic of the serial No.

I was thinking about changing to auto but have decided not too anymore. Now I have to work out if I have a damaged SIII box or it's infact an SII.
    it's behind a 186... any ideas?

If it has the clutch slave cylinder on the left, mounted directly on the bell housing, it is a Series 3 box. If the clutch slave cylinder is mounted vertically outside the bell housing, operating a clutch cross shaft via a bell crank, it is Series 2/2a.

(I is probably possible to assemble a box with a hybrid assortment of bits so that this test does not work, but I have never seen or heard of one. Right at the end of 2a production a small number of home market station wagons had a Series 2a all synchro box with the slave cylinder on the left, but this is close to a Series 3 box anyway.)
