    Key problem

    G'day all,

I just had a bit of an issue trying to take the key out of the ignition after parking in my driveway, in my '05 D3.

It appeared to be turning off (back towards me) the full rotation as every indication on the dash was off, lights went off etc, but key could not be withdrawn from ignition. I restarted the car and tried again a few times, no good.

Eventually, I started the car, backed down the driveway and then back into it and was able to take the key out.

I think that possibly the steering wheel was not centred, as in the front wheels were not straight as from memory when I parked, I made a last minute course correction to line it up. When I reparked, it was straight in so could that be the problem? Do the wheels/steering wheel need to be roughly straight ahead?

I would be interested if anyone has had this problem or could I just have a tired/dicky ignition lock? I had noticed that a couple of times I needed a couple of extra jiggles taking the key out before, but the missus has not.

    Cheers,

    Norm

If it came out after reversing, it's possible that the selector was not in P properly the first time. Maybe it needs adjustment.

This happens with our '09 D3 SE a bit. Maybe twice a week. So far we have found that turning the key to on then back to off usually fixes the problem.
Sometimes we have to start the car then turn off to get the key out.
The car is definitly in park so I intend to have this checked at the next service. Pity it's a sometimes thing, sure not to happen at a service center. We don't find it a big problem, just a bit of a pain.
The wheels don't have to be straight to get the key out.

Since posting it, you wouldn't believe it but it hasn't happened again.

I dunno, I will just keep an eye on it. I'm pretty sure it was in park but not 100% so I can't rule it out...

    Cheers guys,

In a previous life I was a "Valet Parking" driver for Qantas and drove every make of car that you could name and we often had this problem with the keys....just put the gear selector in and out of "P" a few times and it usually releases the key.....but then again being a Landrover you probably have to pat your head and rub your tummy at the same time.....
And for those of you wondering....out of all the cars - Lamborghinis - Ferraris - Maseratis - etc etc my "favourite" was the Bentley...soooo smooth and soooo powerful.
