    It's interesting to read other LR Owner Sites from around the World ;
those folk with half a dozen Dealers within possible drive areas often
say that only one is capable/competent ......... hopeless situation.

The high rate of taxation makes extras a stupid price . If you're not

    Hi Everyone,

My feelings about the crappy D4 in-car Nav system have not improved now that I have had the vehicle for a few weeks. The system seems to work well enough as it did locate an obscure address in Western Sydney last Sunday but it simply lacks the functionality of the el-cheapo devices. e.g. Garmin, Tom Tom, Navman etc

The Disco Map version I have is AUS:20091101 Is this the latest version?

Also I need to install a rear camera screen (the camera is for the caravan not the car). I am considering buying a HEMA Navigator 5". I know it is very expensive but the screen is reversing camera ready. In theory the screen can do double duty and therefore it may be worth the relative higher cost. Does the HEMA Navigator display fixed red light cameras, school zones, speed limits etc?

I know this may not be the best place for this thread but it does relate specifically to the D4. I would be grateful for your views (pun intended).

    Cheers

    George

Also the LR navmap shows blank space when going offroad! (At least on my 6 week old D4 HSE 3.0)

    Hi GeorgeK,

You mention your map version as AUS:20091101. Can you check this as my D4 (Jan 2010 build) says AUS:20081101 and I've been annoyed that for $90k+ you get 2 year old maps.

Agree with everyones comments on the useless Sat Nav. Time to destination is useless as it uses the current average speed to determine distance to go (on a recent trip from Melbourne to the Grampians after a week of driving around the city it gave me a time of 5hrs 30mins versus the 3 hours it actually took). The TomTom gave 3hrs 15mins for the same trip as it uses the speed limits.

I read in another post about probably the most useful feature of the Sat Nav. With the satnav screen on press the voice command on the steering wheel and say "navigation; I'm Hungry". The locations of all restaurants will appear. I tried it and it works - funny as. Now I've just got to figure out how to get rid of them!!!

there are functions that the factory system has that an aftermarket cant do and options aftermarket that factory wont do.... BUT FOR THE PRICE the factory system doesn't cut it.

I have used both and found the factory system is better at locating satellites (no down time searching for same), can track movement through tunnels in in areas with out reception, will show you fuel stations when the fuel light comes on, sat nav voice command, neat fitment and minimal issues with theft and that afaik is about it.

I haven't noticed any real problems with calculating time to destination but haven't really paid close attention either.

On my Garmin I could have more additional information such as showing direction of travel, distance to destination, time to next way point, time to destimation, height and a stack of other programable options that I can't do on the factory.

Fact is dollar for dollar aftermarket is a better option. For the price there should be a whole lot of options available that are not.

Thanks for the info guys, this is vindicating my decision. Back in May/June (I think it was?) I placed my order for a D4 SE. I had been deliberating over the sat nav option for some time, but eventually I decided to omit it. I mainly wanted it for the reversing camera as I have a young family. People have assured me the parking sensors are great, plus there's no real substitute for supervision... My main gripe was with the price, $5k for the sat nav and another $1k for the camera. (I say $5k as you don't have a choice with the ipod cable so why is it listed seperately??) In all fairness to LR the government is taking around $2k in LCT! BTW I still have a chance to change the order as it's not being built till next month and delivery is December. FYI order is for White SE with rear air.

Don't quote me but my understanding is that the Sat Nav gives you the touch screen which allows the use of the 4X4 Screen and improves phone and sound system functionality.

    Agree with ballen.
"Time to destination is useless as it uses the current average speed to determine distance to go". Absolute woefull. I calculate (alright, estimate) in my head better than the sat nav puter!

    Also agree with trobbo.
"factory system is better at locating satellites (no down time searching for same)". This is way better than my TomTom. Something to do with the antenna & location perhaps...

certainly with the D3 you cant get the 4x4 info without the sat nav. It's a nice gimmick to show my mates.... but really
