I had a look at the Cooper LTZ's recently when at my Tyre Centre. They look good and have an impressive load rating of 120S. Although not technically LT construction that load rating would certainly be good for offroad heavy load carrying. As an all rounder I think they would be much quieter than my Cooper STT's (on 17 inch rims). I might have considered them if I had a set of 18 inch rims but my 2009 'run out' D3 came with 19 inch rims.
I have no concerns about Cooper tyres per se. I think the brand is less important- I have always used LT construction for remote area travel with full load /towing and have seen various brands including Coopers suffer multiple punctures / tyre failures with passenger construction. I just happen to have Cooper LT tyres and they work well for me.

Yes but to maintain legal diameter etc they were only available in 245/70x17.
Also considered Cooper STT 245/70x17, Bridgestone D694 265/65x17, BFG AT 265/65x17, & Maxxis AT-771/700 Bravo 265/65x17.

Mate I can only given you my experience (and I dont touch coppers because I know a number of people who have had dramas) with high load ratings on passenger carcass tyres. I had Pirelli Scorpion AT's that had a high load rating and were said to be an LT because for their size they fell into the range of load rating normally covered by LT designation - put on my Disco 2 In a slightly smaller size I had the same tyre but in an LT put on my Disco 1 at about the same time. The D2 squirmed a lot towing 2 tonns and the D1 didnt - irrespective of what pressure i ran the D2 at and you are very limited with a passenger tyre as to the max pressure. I got sick of the P's on the D2 - great on sand but no good towing. I got rid of them on the D2 and stuck on Maxxis Bravo 751 AT's in an LT - the load rating is higher again and the max pressure is insane (80psi plus from memory) and they simply do not squirm when towing. They handle better than the pirelli too. The sidewalls are 3 ply on the Maxxis LT.

PS. Ie if you want to tow heavy and safely you cannot beat a true LT (that has LT on the sidewall)

Cost.

Everything else about the D694 is terrific. Obviously it is an AT thread pattern and not the M/T I ended up with.
But the cost/value relationship IMO was more in favour of the other brands.

They're on my short list in LT255/65-17 or LT265/65-17 as an only set of tyres when I do the conversion from 19".

Hi there. For me 3rd 4wd and 3rd set of Coopers in the past 7 yrs, lots of off road and 2 flats in almost 200000ks, one a broken piece of rusty screw driver on the way up Cape York, the other, still heading up the Cape a mate clipped a rock bank exiting a river crossing and jambed rock between the rim, which deflated the tyre. Easy fix that night at the camp and reinflated the tyre. Have a set of STC's on my D3 and still have the set of ST's on my D2 for the past 4 yrs. No arguements from me. When buying the tyres for the D3 6months ago, did lots of research, but seemed pointed back to the Coopers.

The STC's have been great, LT construction and 10 ply, seem pretty solid to me.

Good to hear. I am not doubting you but I know plenty of people who have not had such a good run with them with chipping and worse.

The 10 ply would be the tread and sidewalls are only 2 I think, possibly 3 ply - I just add that because some people who read this thread might not realise the difference between wall ply and tread area ply rating. From memory the Maxxis in the higher sizes are 10 ply tread.

I have just picked up a set of Maxxi Bighorns 245/70/17 LT on MAK 17x7.5 (italian) rims. The Maxxis are 10ply tread, 3ply sidewall and yes have some insane max pressure of 80 psi stamped on the sidewall. The MAK rims are boost II's from their commercial range and fit on the 2.7 D4 well. Load rating is 1125kg and ET is 40mm. Not yet on the car but I will post picks and update on how they drive after I get back from the Flinders in early October.

I've had a faultless run with Cooper ST's on a Prado & GU. No chipping or block cracking or puncture issues, & good mileage & towing. Great tyre. Just thought I'd give the Maxxis brand a go to assess cost vs value.

And yeap, Maxxis seems to provide most sizes in LT with either 10ply with 3ply walls or 8ply with 2ply walls.
