That is nearly an identical reply i got close to 12mnths ago.
There is another thread on here somewhere, earlier this year at a show some of the NSW members went to the same convesation came up.

I did the same thing & emailed in anticipation as there were reports of the 19" tyres coming then.

Back to lookin at 17"s & ATZ's i think....

If only one of the tyre companies out there would produce a decent 19" AT tyre instead of having to choose between a mud tyre or road tyre, I'm sure they would create alot of sales.

That's the official response. Same for the other manufacturers.

However....there may be some light on the horizon all of a sudden. But don't wait for it. Also consider the likely cost of 5 x 19" tyres vs 5 x 17" tyres + 5 x 17" rims.

Been doing that for the last months or 2, Getting quotes on rims/tyres etc for my baby.
I have the 17" rims x 4 & awaiting 2 more to come.
I have a cost of the tyres ATZ's by Mickey Thompson are likely going to be fitted.

Lets see...
I am only guessing at conversion rates at the moment but using the 2:1 as a guesstimate.
rims from the UK 150pound approx. $300 (for 4)
shipping to Aus (a nightmare mind you) $350pound approx. $700
ATZ ($390ea) $1560 (265/70/17LT 4 Rib version)

So all up about $2560 for 4 rims & tyres.

Now..

4 new tyres for 19" rims @ $600ea...theres $2400 to start with & they are just the GY Wranglers.

Admittantly prices will vary from place to place, but just a rough idea.

The way I'd look at it:

19" tyre x 5 x $600 = $3000

17" AT2 x 5 x $275 = $1375
+
17" BB-6 x 5 x $300 = $1500
= $2875

can't remember the BB-6 price to be honest. Also, if people choose to sell their 19" rims and tyres then that goes into the equation too.

Also, if you stake a tyre or damage a sidewall then a $600 tyre is crying time. I just put the tiniest little stakelet through the sidewall of one of mine weekend before last but I wrote it off regardless, just real happy it was a relatively cheap tyre. I still have it for repair practice. It was an inside sidewall as well for a change. Ah well, cost of doing business.

As for a lot of sales of 19" tyres? Nope, the D4 offroading numbers are very small compared to what the tyre boys deal with, eg the volume sellers that fit Pajero/Prado or even the 200 Series 285/17. What they'll do is bring in a boatload and charge silly money for them, and everyone has to pay because there'll be no alternative all-terrain in say 255/55/19.

Pete, might be cheaper to get the rims shipped individually. The don't weigh that much each but at the dimensions of a rim it starts to cost what they term cubic meterage. Therefore a single rim may come as parcel post but 2 or more may be equivalent to shipping the equivalent of a 50kgs or more and have to come freight.
