    Gearbox fault

    Hi

Has anyone experience this problem on their MY10 2.7 TD Disco 4?

    Porblem:

After going up a fairly steep hill on Low Range, Drive (D) and Mud Ruts Terrain Response for about 2 to 5 minutes, there was a warning message
“Gearbox Fault – Special Program not available “and the Terrain Response switched itself back to the general program.

However, low range and Off Road height were not affected and the car continued to drive well despite the yellow triangle warning sign.

I stopped for a few minutes and stopped the engine and restarted the car, and the fault disappeared, and I was able to use Terrain Response again.

However, it happened again after another moderately steep climb. This time, I was not on any special program. I repeated the stop and start procedure again and
    It corrected itself.

This happened at least 4 times

When I did similar climbs in High Range and 1st or 2nd gear, this did not happen.

Anyone konw what the cause might be?

    Thanks

    go-disco 4,

I have a 2008 D3 2.7tdv6 but had the same or similar warning climbing in the Vic high Country. Same scenario as you describe, long Steep uphill in low range.

I put it down to the transmission overheating as the sustained incline may limit the ability of the transmission fluid to circular efficiently and therefore only limited amount of fluid moving around which heats up transmission and causes warning.

I was close to the top of Mt Pinnibar at the time so, turned off and on again, warning went away for a few minute but came back so I stopped at the summit for 30 -45 min to let it cool right down and never had the problem again. No faults or issues identified at the next service.

I do not think it is completely uncommon and it does not seem to matter if you are in a special program in TR. There are some thread in the forum and on the Disc UK forum.

Get it checked out if it happens again, i.e not just that one occasion even though you said it happen 4 times on that occasion. The bigger worry is the warning coming on after on 5 mins, mine was after about 30 min of sustained climbing in low range.

    Hope this helps,

    George.

I have also had it happen in similar circumstances on my 2008 D3. I have enquired what caused it and the dealer thinks that it may be a small amount of slippage being detected in the transmission due to fluid cavitation or similar. I do not believe it is heat related but it may be due to the angle the vehicle is on. It dosent occur repeatably enough for me to form more of an opinion and the time I did have the dealer analyse the codes the fault was buried with a heap of other codes caused by a car trailer with dodgy wiring.
It would be worth asking your dealer to have a look at the next service and posting the result back here.

    go-disco 4/Tote,

I should have put my standard warning on my post/summation below, that "this comment is based on absolutely no mechanical knowledge or detailed understanding of the inner working of the transmission, only my bush logic and propensity to offer an opinion on something I have very little knowledge of""

    Hi go-disco4,
Dont climb steep hills in "D" it is best to use command shift & pull back to 2nd gear for climbing hills, This doesnt allow the gearbox to overheat as it is continually searching for gears, all 6 of them.

Using 2nd locks the torque convertor & keep the gerabox cooler.

    Cheers.

    Thank you all very much

    "Sniegy" could be right.

When I climbed on High Range, I had the command shift & pull back to 1st or 2nd gear, and it did not register the warning.

I am having the dealer check it soon.

    Let you know the result

    Thanks

Hi Sniegy, Is this a definite thing? Or are you working on a discoweb style deduction? i'm not being a smartass i genuinely would like to know if this is accurate?
    cheers

    Hi Nomadicd3,
It is a definate thing, I also am a LR Experience Driver trainer, & we did a lot of testing when we changed to the 05MY products as using "D" in a D2 was fine, we could climb just about anything but found 3rd to be best.

In the D3/4 using "D" would cause the vehicle to stall !
So we hooked up the IDS/SSD unit & drove while watching real time monitors & could see that 2nd gear was the best to use & would keep the temp's down.
Using "D" we could physically watch the temps rise as the vehicle searched for the appropriate gear.

    Cheers.
