Had a bit of fun in a nearby state Forrest helping christen a mates new Jeep (better out of the box than his previous very modified older model Jeep). Not my thing but a fun and capable vehicle off the road (not so good on the road). Anyway mission accomplished - jeep introduced to mud and Disco had a great time.

The GY Wranglers were a lot of fun in mud, lots of opposite lock and right foot steering. My new hub centre caps for the Disco on show too.

Now the real question, which was better offroad???

Haha, interesting question. My disco (no mods and on road tyres) is the proven equal in all conditions to his old jeep (3" lift, lockers f&r, swaybar disconnect, BFG AT KO etc).

The new one has traction control (novelty to him) and much lower suspension and electric steering (really nice steering off-road ). We didn't do anything hardcore and neither were at all challenged. The jeep did well in mud, the disco was a lot better as the mud got thicker and some tight manoeuvring without loosing momentum was needed.

The disco utterly trashes it for comfort on and off the road.

Not the best answer - I quite like the little jeep but they are not an all rounder like the disco and in stock form they don't have as good ground clearance or approach/departure angles but are more nippy so to speak.

Went for a day drive to Wheeny Creek Trail ( Gees Arm Sth trail as it's other know as)

Had a fun day in 37 degrees temp! ( Kept the disco at 23 inside though!)

Constant rock steps, glad I had LLAMS, bigger tyres and sliders.
The sliders took quite a few hits but no damage, marks on them and compressor plate, fuel tank bash plate now needs some work to remove dents!

The disco drove almost every step first attempt, didn't give the last face a go though.

In fact is was only the very last step on the way out I had to have a second attempt.

So Rich, how did your Disco go in comparison to the Jeep?

For context, SWMBO wants to buy a Jeep Wrangler and is totally convinced that it will destroy the D3 offroad in stock form...

It was a 4wd club trip, only 4 vehicles. 1 LWB Wrangler 1 SWB Wrangler and a dual cab Landcruiser traytop.
All vehicles where modified, Jeeps had the most mods.
A standard Jeep would of sustained plenty of damage. A standard D3 would of too though!
Don't you believe the Jeep would destroy the Disco off road in stock form. The Disco is awesome because of it's electronic wizardry.
In fact I was the only vehicle to make every section first go ( bar 1) even the heavily modified Jeep in the photo had probably 5 extra attempts than I did.

I spent a bit of time at the wheel of the new one on and off the road and I have spent a lot of time at the wheel of the older one. I quite like them both but they are noisy and rough as guts on road and the old one, being heavily modified, was a pig to drive on the road.

Out of the box, mainly due to ride height and traction, there is no way that the new one is as capable as a Disco off the road. A new Rubicon model 2 door may have certain advantages due to its size, but frankly even with a 3" lift the old one often hit ground in places I didn't (particularly at the rear surprisingly) and even with F & R lockers had significantly less traction than my D3 in most circumstances. I could always keep up with it anywhere we went and we went a lot of places.

The new one is obviously too new to have any view on reliability, but the old one was dubbed Jeep = "Just Empty Every Pocket" - in 200,000km the only thing on the whole vehicle that was unproblematic was the motor which was the legendary 4.0 straight six (it went through several diffs, constant driveline oil leaks and multiple gearbox rebuilds).

As I said before, not my cup of tea, as they are not a complete vehicle in my opinion, too heavily focussed and lacking broad day to day capabilities. But I can understand the appeal.
