    D3 parking brake issue

    Driving to Port Fairy Friday afternoon. Three kids in the back and Boat behind. Noticed a light shuddering which started suddenly while on the Geelong freeway and assumed a blown tire on the trailer. Stopped and checked the trailer tires and bearings and found nothing wrong. Both rear wheels/rims on the D3 were hot. I had asked AMV ringwood to look at the parking brakes while servicing it after two warnings. Greg at AMV said his lads had blown off or cleaned the brakes up a little.

    Took of a wheel to see what I could see. Being both dark and rather busy beside the freeway at 9pm, I could not see how to adjust the brakes or anything notable. On the wheel I had off drum was spinning but seemed to be catching a little on the now cool brake drum at one point. I had chocked all wheels and had the car in neutral before rotating the hub. Called the RACV- what a waste of time. 2 hours later RACV turned up had said he was very wary of jacking up Landrovers and wanted to tow it! Useless!
    While waiting for him I had reread the manual. I discussed the parking brake manual release and showed RACV where it was. He tried with pliers, I showed him how to do it using a lever! As he was too scared to jack up the D3 the only check he could recommend was drive it. The brakes remained cool when I checked in Geelong and Colac. Shuddering occurred again before Camperdown. I manually released the parking brake again checked again every 50kms. Got to Port Fairy at 3am. 12 hours for a 3 hour drive.
    Rang AMV in the morning and Greg told me how to adjust the parking brakes. Found the adjustment at 6am on the hub on one side and 1am on the other side. Tighten up then back of three turns and problem fixed.
    Greg said his staff had not adjusted the brakes. He mentioned other reports of the electronic parking brake not releasing fully? Anyone else seen this? Why did it occur when no adjsutment had been made to the brakes other than the cleaning. Greg mentioned it is a know problem?

    I have my D3 in to dealer for exactly the same problem at the moment.
    PB indicator is flashing an error. Terrible noise from rear when park brake engaged (just the once, didnt use it after that), loud rattle from left hand rear wheel when hitting a bump in road and evidence that the hub has got very very hot - coating has become powdery and flaking off.

    Dealer says PB module needs replacement and that the PB shoes are very loose, causing the rattle.

    Interestingly I too had been towing and also experienced the slight shudder which went away and at the time I put down to road surface.

    Well the good news is that the dealer replaced the PB module under warranty, but refused to pay for the labour and parts to replace the PB shoes as these are a normal wear and tear item. Though how much wear and tear can there be on a component at 40K kms which basically only used while the vehicle is stationery. Its not as if you drive around with the PB on.
    So I guess I will have to complain to LRA. Be interested to hear from any other D3 owners with PB issues.

    PS So although the dealership has changed hands in Canberra the after sales services is still ****e. And they wonder why I dont get it serviced by them.
