Mine has King coils, 50mm lift and the original shocks. Does anyone have new shocks, what type, length, do you get more travel with longer shocks and when do you know the current shocks are worn, what signs?
Cheers
Andrew
Dobinsons supply struts that are a little longer as well as a higher rate spring, I have them on my D3S.
The ride quailty suffers but you can't get have everything everytime.
There was a D3 coiler getting around with a 3" Pedders lift (65mm not quite 3") from memory he had to have longer shocks/struts fitted, for the life of I can't remember the forum he was on, Discoweb, Expadition Portals, it was an American, but he was in OZ, Sydney I think.

Based on my own observations (D3 with Dobinsons springs/struts) I would say not much different from a standard D3. The angles on the shafts are not much different from what they were standard and are less than those of my wifes FWD Renault. I don't think 65mm will bother the D3.
However if doing the spring thing again I would stick with the longer struts, paired with a custom set of longer springs with a rate closer to the standard coils. I don't tow anything heavy or overload on gear so could trade off some rate for ride comfoft.
Yes Air Suspension gives a different result, at a different price both initially and over time.
If I was setting up a towing/tourer, Air would win, same for if I had only one vehicle to drive, but I don't.
I would rather have air, but instead I have been spending the difference in purchase price (D3 coilers can be picked up fairly economically) on other stuff like a new fridge and a set of muddies.
My daily drive is no magic carpet ride, so by comparison a few kg/mm increase in rate for the D3 was hardly a concern.
