Prior to purchasing my D3 (previous vehicle) I used the Glasses Dealers Guide to give me an idea on depreciation values compared to the Landcruiser.
Basically, I wanted to know that if I kept a D3 for 4 years compared to the Landcruiser, what would both vehicles be worth at the end of this period.
I found that a 4 year old Disco (and Landcruiser) was fetching more than what the book stated. I also found that diesels were worth alot more.
Der you say, but it goes back to supply & demand. More people are wanting diesels these days than petrols, therefore the cost difference between second hand diesels & petrols will increase.
The demand for diesel BMW's since I purchased my wifes car 4 years ago, has increased around 25%.

    Cheers, Craig

The company selling the D3 will definately not be keeping the D2 and probably just rung around their usual wholesalers what they offered sight unseen.
Extras mean nothing, in fact they prefer a bog stock standard model, they are easier to sell.
Who ever buys from wholesaler will take a gamble and has to give some warranty and still make a margin.
We were gonna trade the wifes Golf TDi in on the new GTI but they offered us a ridiculas trade in.
We may still do it but will sell privately 1st.
Even if you sell the car for $6-8K you are still in front and someone probably gets a great car.
    Win Win situation really.
When we bought the Golf for example I was going to trade my TT in but once again they offered $22k for it, I advertised it for $31k and sold it to 1st person on second day on car sales.
Be realistic and it will sell.

Good luck, the D3's I have driven are absolutely fantastic.

    Laurie,

I think as has already been mentioned the dealer will have a number for the deal. This will include the differential between what he sells you the D3 at and what he can get the D2 away for.

I think people get a bit caught up in what their vehicle is worth.

I have always worked on the theory that I should have the same change over principle as the dealer, for example if you think the D2 is worth say $11,000 and you are happy to pay $50,000 for the D3 then the change over is $39,000. I have no idea about the correctness of the numbers only the basic maths.

If you can do the change over for better than that then you are ahead, so even if he only pays $1,000 for the D2 but you get the D3 for better than $40,000, i.e a better than $39,000 change over (as an extreme example) you are ahead.

I have sold cars privately and also traded in with dealers and for all the mucking about I have found trading with the dealer to be about equal as long as you get close to what you think is the right change over price.

My thoughts only, good luck which ever way you go.

    George

P.S - In re-reading this it does sound a bit condescending, it is not meant to be, I am only trying to point out the obvious which sometimes gets lost in the emotion of the deal.

2005 HSE V8 Traded 1 month ago to dealer

I have a 02 D2 Td5 S, it has 188k on the clock, ARB B/Bar, snorkel & side steps, chipped motor and h/d towbar. They offered $3,500 so no way I'm going to trade (as a side note was offered $9k sight unseen ! I didn't even tell them about the accessories by Sydney dealer on a 04 RR HSE Td6 same price and slightly lower Klm's than the D3).
What offer do you think I should put on this D3 without a trade? I would like to have the auto flushed and a ARB b/bar fitted.
Should I get the b/bar later or get in the deal?
I hit 2 roos last year; no damage thanks to the b/bar on the D2.
    Any opinions?
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

    Hi,

If its any help I traded my 2005 HSE V8 to a dealer on a new D4 in December for $33k, saw it advertised recently for $45k. It had 100k on the clock. as others have stated I look at Changeover price not the trade price and I was reasonably happy AND very happy with the D4 2.7

    Thumbs up Thanks

    Thanks to everyone one replied.
I have taken note and have revised my offer; so here’s hoping !! The change over price I understood; it was just the initial offer and no movement of the window sticker price that shook me. Hence trying to put together my offer for a no trade deal.
    Again Thanks
    Laurie
