The damage to the head and block was so bad that I decided to go with the dealer fitted replacement/recon long engine from LR. No assistance from LR Australia because we're out of warranty, and no gesture of goodwill.

The route cause diagnosis was valve spring failure, it's snapped through the middle, I suspect a material defect but need to get it on a microscope to see if there are signs of inclusions or surface defects.

It was on the ramps last week, 99% complete, but they discovered that when the RAC stripped it down the rived out one of the hoses and snapped it! so far I've been extremely unimpressed by the RAC; some things are best left to the stealers.

We're just waiting for the hose from the UK; I was hoping to have the disco back this week, if only to give back the very kindly supplied Ssangyong Kyron; OMG what a car; the wipers fell off after 2 days and the water trap warning light blinks more often than the indicators!

Depending on your inclination I would consider legal action through the statutory warranty provisions to recover your costs, particularly if there is evidence of valve spring manufacturing issues.

Maybe as simple as lodging a claim with your equivalent of "Office of Small Claims", consumer affairs or whatever.

You never know unless you try.

Take Garry's advice it is at least worth a try.
You have proof it was a manuafacturing fault and there is a 'reasonable expectation' that an engine will last longer.

We finally got the car back on the 19th May - we would have had it back sooner if the RAC had not rived out and broken the purge pipe, which was on back order from the UK.

It's now done 800km and apart from a "lumpy" idle and squeeky brakes, touch wood everything appears OK - which is more than can be said for my piggy bank!!

Credit where credit is due Southern Land Rover did a fine job of the repair and did their best to keep the costs as low as possible
