What is the advantage over the plastic one? - I understood the steel one does not have the filter in it that provides a level of protection to the gearbox.

Just ease and cost of future servicing. Steel pan has a separate filter wheras the orig is one piece plastic. Orig also rquires mounting bolts to be undone or loosening of the valve block.
Steel one was originally made for the Ford Territory where the plastic one would get holed. Not an issue for LR due to underbody protection.

    • [QUOTE=RichardK;1450860]Mine was the single flush with the ZF oil
    • The bill was $665 not $620.
    • Steel pan kit $350
    • 6 litres Lifeguard 6 Fluid $210
    • Harness plug sleeve $20
    • Labour 1 hour $85
Ah there's a few differences then. My pan was $425 and 2 hrs labour. I guess you really turned on the charm Richard...
I suppose they have had a bit more practice recently as i know there has been 3 other disco3's done since mine, not including yours Richard. They may be bulk ordering the pans to cut down on the transport costs.
Oh well is all good, at least there is one good source of gearbox servicing in Perth.
    cheers

What's with the whole box 'n dice routine ?

Many report that there's nothing on the filter pad when it's
replaced . Just changing the fluid through twice saves a heap
of trouble and a fair amount of money . Then there's the leaking
new parts possibility .............. it amuses me that whenever there
is a new bit to buy/fit/replace with , some just have to buy it .

What is a Harness Plug Sleeve - sounds electrical?

I presume that it is something that is needed when the pan kit is installed or is it something that is needed independent of the kit and just whenever a transmission oil change is done.
