If your thinking of a demo, check your insurance conditions. Some policies offer new for old replacement for the first 2 years (whatever) but only for the original owner. So if you buy a demo, the new for old clause is void, at least that's how it works for Allianz.

Sounds like there are some killer deals going around for the same or less money than I paid in Jan 2010 for a 2009 build SE 3.0l.......slightly jealous...LOL!!!!

I wasn't too bothered by the fact that mine was an ex-demo. I understand the concerns about it being thrashed, etc but I didn't think it would be too much of an issue. Maybe I'm naive.

    Why?:

It's not a second hand car, and it's freakin expensive. When I've test driven expensive 'luxury (whatever that means)' cars in the past, the dealers haven't ever let me away by myself.

The D4 is not a small truck, has lots of stuff to get your head around and I don't imagine many people jumping in it and just wizzing away like they stole it. I figure by the time they get the thing started, sort out what's what and got themselves out of the yard and down a few streets, it would be pretty warm.

In hindsight......having owned one for the best part of two years.....you'd have to be trying to break a 3.0l D4 to thrash it. It revs freakin hard with no help what-so-ever and has brakes to handle all this with no issue. Even in 'manual' the transmission shifts as you hit the red range. A D4 makes 100 in less than 10 secs....it's designed to do that....you'd have to be a complete **** to attempt that sort of driving all over the place in a 3 ton truck.

Yes I know, they are definately out there.....but I made a gamble on stats...

On the plus side...at the time when the car had an asking price of FROM $93K plus on-roads (Not sure what was standard on a 2009 D4...but I believe I got a few extras), I got a D4 SE with Sat Nav, premium sound, Blue Tooth, Ipod, tow hitch and tongue, tinted windows, premium floor mats and mud-flaps. Bi-Xenon was standard then.

Would have loved, rear A/C and eDiff.

Issues.....same as reported by everybody else.....
    • Over-filled compressor drier.
    • Primay turbo oil leak.
My price, shipped from Cairns to Brisbane $87K.

My demo is classified as a new car....there is no record of previous ownership.

You buy it from the dealer the same as a new car.

    Confused....

Quote from previous post - all options listed possible for A$83000 !!! WOW !!!

"For the record I have rubber mats, cargo mat, Bi-Zenons, Rear Air, Rear e-Diff, Metallic Paint & Corporate Servicing Plan for $85k DA. Had I have rung around 3 months earlier I am 100% confident that could have been better by at least $2k, but $1k may have been in costs to go interstate for the deal."

Also be careful with the warranty dates,it may have started when the vehicle was first registered.

A question i have for people is what options did you have included in you purchase or wish you had of included?
The reason i ask is we have yet to sign a contract and looking at the options list im leaning towards the upgraded headlights, the sat nag, rear camera, and maybe the rear air.
    Any other options i need?
Will sign an offer to purchase once we get rid of our 07 prado.

    Steve,

Would strongly urge reconsidering the sat nav - the standard LR item is a b*!^$#! waste of lots of money. When I ordered my SE two years ago the only way to get the flash sound system I wanted was to order the sat nav (figure that out!) - I love the sound, but the nav is hopeless out of major cities/towns. Have just forked out a ridiculous sum (almost $400) for "updated" mapping - and now feel like a twit for being taken to the cleaners twice on the same subject!

I believe that with the 2012 model (which you get if you order now) you can get upgraded sound without the nav. But if you want rear camera I think you have to get it - would strongly suggest aftermarket nav with aftermarket camera instead.

Most others here will say get the rear e-diff: I didn't, and have been some seriously scary places without it (and without too much drama). But if I were ordering again today? Yes, I'd tick that box. Peace of mind.

Have fun placing the order - and if you haven't yet done so give the guys down here at Albany LR a call: they've been brilliant by me. And no, I don't get a commission!!

That was certainly the case in my instance...registered late October and I purchased in early Jan 2010. I doubt if there would be much wiggle room in that and since it was only a couple of months and I've 'saved' the best part of $10K in the purchase, I wasn't bothered.

I also intend to replace the car or extend the warranty before it expires, so in a period of so many years, two months isn't a biggy for me.

Other than that, the only sale that has occured is between you and the dealer. Other than the original registration, there is no record of previous ownership....'cause there hasn't technically been any, your log book states nothing but the one sale...to you....and LR Roadside Assist has you down as the only owner.

But with all insurers, best to have that conversation up front. However,
I'd smash any Insurer that tried to suggest otherwise....

You hear so much stuff about insurance companies and their policies and there are plenty of folks Oz wide who would rightly curse their shenanigans during the floods but sometimes the concerns aren't real. I broke my D4 on Fraser Island and was told by all and sundry to not tell the insurer where the accident occured, as Insurers often won't cover off-road use. I read the policy end to end....no issue as far as I was concerned. Rang my company....no issue there either. Stressed over nothing.

If you are bothered by the concept of buying an ex demo, Do your homework and remove the uncertainty.

    Cheers,

    Kev.

The reason I chimed in was because it was a direct question to me by the insurer "Is the vehicle a demo? No. OK it is a new for old policy in that case" The terms and conditions of the policy wrt 'new for old' certainly specify the word 'New' for the clause to be honoured.

From the terms and conditions of my policy:

Replacement of new vehicle after a total loss
If your vehicle was purchased new by you and becomes a total loss within two years of the starting date of the original registration, we will replace your vehicle with a new vehicle of the same make, model and series.

If you are not the owner of the vehicle from the original registration date, then who owned it at the original registration date? Is a 'demo' vehicle a 'new' vehicle? I really don't know the answer to either of these questions.

The dealer certainly makes a distinction between the words 'New' and 'Demo'. On my sale agreement there were 3 check boxes - 'Second Hand', 'New' and 'Demo'. One is circled by the dealer to specify exactly what the transaction describes.

The best advise is given above - check it with your insurer and remove the uncertainty. I am not saying I am any sort of authority on this, just a doubt was raised in mind as a result of a conversation.

It's a very good point mate, no doubt about that. I'm sure you'll find that some won't differentiate and others will. I didn't think about it till you posted your comments, as I wasn't queried and I arranged mine over the phone with the insurer that I was already with for my two other cars.

You sure as hell wouldn't want to find out the hard way.

Sorry if I came across as doubting or having a go at you.....it was an anti-insurance company rant.

    Cheers,

    Kev.
