HORRIFIC ACCIDENT WITH A D3 IN SOUTH AFRICA

Just some pics I have taken from a horrific accident a few kilo's out of my home town Mtunzini here in South Africa.

The accident happened on 23 Dec. @ 04h30 , in rainy conditions on a 4 lane highway , 2 lanes per direction.
A family of 4 were travelling in a D3 on holiday when an Audi A4 , doing far in excess of 200km/h lost control and veered off into the oncoming lane into the unfortunate family.

The Audi completely disintegrated, the drivers vital organs were removed by paramedics in the engine bay and on the roof rack of the D3. The impact was so severe that the engine and gearbox were lying in the field separated from each other.

For those who drive a D3/4 , well all that have seen the vehicle here have commented on how well the interior looks after this accident.
I have personally inspected this vehicle and the passenger foot well were pushed back approx 300mm to the rear.
The rest of the D3 were completely intact.
The husband suffered a broken arm, the wife a badly shattered leg , that will need major surgery in the future. The young daughters suffered a knee cap and a shoulder injury respectively. Amazingly they all survived. All were wearing their safety belts.

I hope some people will learn from this, SPEED KILLS and alcohol seems to be involved , the police are investigating that the deceased came from a party in Durban nearly 140 km from here.

    More pics.
In this pic the severity of the impact can be seen.
It's taken from the front of the Audi, the point of entry is from the left front headlight area. The flat part you see is the D3 winch that was stuck in there , it actually fell off only when the wreck was unloaded from the flat bed truck.
Believe it or not , beneath the rubber mat is the dashboard, that's approximately to the gear levers position.
The drivers seat is visible and the drivers door, if you look to the right of the seat you can see the Audi's steering wheel , wedged into the drivers seat with the shaft clearly visible.

Having driven on South African roads many times I have found the speed is sometimes insane for the conditions. This does not only happen in SA as I have seen some horrific crashes in Zambia, Angola, and Tanzania.
The pictures show that the D3/4 is a very strong vehicle, and if driven in a normal and safe way according to the conditions, will help protect the occupants.
My heart goes out to the family of the deceased in the A4 with such a tragic and avoidable loss at Christmas.

Shows how strong the T5 platform is though!

That looks to be one of the last batch of G4 Challenge vehicles (the ones destined for Mongolia). Any chance you could get me the VIN & PM it over, for the club records??

    Jeez, that's horrific.

I always think of Audi as a solid, quality car, but it is clear which was the winner in the quality stakes here.

And hell of a shame for the families involved at christmas.

    When a 1.5t 5 star vehicle hits a 2.7t 5 star vehicle the stars don't mean much.

    Much the same if a 5 star 2.7t D3 hits a 0 star 50 t Mack truck the stars don't mean much.
