If the carrier or wheel is coming around enough to hit the taillights, you need to adjust the cam underneath. I have not had any issues with my carrier, and do not even bother with a locking pin around town. I would use a locking pin for off road work though. I have though about a gas strut, but it would mean butchering the main arm, and I would think some reinforcement. I suspect a fair bit of trial and error would be required to get a gas strut working correctly, and I don't see that as a priority currently.
