Thread: Tow ball details D4 (inc differences to D3)

    Tow ball details D4 (inc differences to D3)

    There is a current thread on a broken D3 tow hitch including mentions to the D4, but what are the specifications of the D4 hitch?
    • Are the D4 recevers parallel to the ground?
    • What is the hitch centre height in the D4 type receiver?
    • What is the ball height with a standard tongue in the D4 type receiver?
    • What is the comparison in heights between the D4 OEM hitch and the Mitch Hitch?
    • Are there one or two chain points on the D4 and can they be used as recovery points?
    • Does anyone have any images of the tongue in the receiver?

    Q1 - yes
    Q2 - 350mm
    Q3 - 450mm
    Q4 - ?
    Q5 - 2. I would not use for recovery although obviously rated to 3.5T
    Q6 - perhaps later

    Q1 - as Graham said & you can see - yes
    Q2 - 350mm - mine is about 330mm in the garage at standard height.
    Q3 - 450mm - mine is flipped over for a lower van hitch & is 360 to ball centre line.
    Q4 - ?
    Q5 - 2. I would not use for recovery although obviously rated to 3.5T
    I wouldn't use these points ever for recovery.
    Q6 - see attached!(hopefully!)

    For recovery, use the tow point behind the removable cover in the rear bumper.

    The centre of the Mitch Hitch receiver is the same height as the centre of the recovery eye behind the plastic cover.

    Hey Les,
    The bottom of your ball looks very low. I had my D4 thoroughly on the bump-stops yesterday so along with the top of 1 rear tyre scraping the guard lining, if my tow-ball had been that low it would probably have been gouging a trench in the road!

    Haha - better go see a doctor hey

    This is for our Jayco road going van, but have had no problems yet at all. The bottom of the thread is still 260mm at least off the ground, so more than most SUV's!!!

    I have raised & lowered the D4 on occasions to suit driveways etc. especially whilst reversing. Yet another advantage to the air suspension!

    My thoughts are this;

    If your going to be doing offroad while towing, the Mitch Hitch is the only answer.

    If your not doing offroad, stay with the OEM hitch.

    When I say offroad, I'm not talking gravel roads

    BUT, what is classed as offroad, a formed gravel road, fire trail, spur track OR is it a track not on a map
