    Normal parts replacement timing

Hoping you all can help. I'm looking at buying a 2008 LR D3 SE with 130k km. I have the service history from the dealer but there does not appear to be a record of replacement of wear and tear type parts ( eg suspension, ball joints etc) that I would have expected would have been replaced by now. Concern is that they might all need replacing at once!

Interested in users opinions of what components should have been replaces by now or will be shortly.

    Thanks

    Scott

    Bump.

Any suggestions from current owners who have owned their vehicle up to and past the 130k mark?

    Thanks in advance

just because you *think* they might need replacing, doesnt mean they actually need to be replaced, if something is maintained, not abused or overloaded, and not an actual wear item like tyres, belts, etc, life can often extend to a lot more than you'd expect

I find the experts that know the marque know what needs replacing (that's not the dealer....apprentices have to start somewhere but I don't think they have the experience).
If it were me I would take it to a Land Rover expert in your area....you should then find out what actually needs replacing.
I don't know much about the D3, but that's what I would do.
With my previous 4wd I would not trust the manufacturer, so took it to someone I could trust. I do the same with my D4.
    Good luck.

I will have a go at trying to shed some light on your question.

The biggest issue seems to be the oil life that is expected but seems to be not living up to expectations , so see if you can find out these things.
1 has the gearbox had a oil change, and if by luck its had the metal sump fitted.
    2. Would look at Diff oils and transfer case as well.
3 I was told when I got my 2008 model that I should have the front ball joints changed at 100,000ks, so would look at them.

I was also told that at 150,000 the cam belt and fuel pump belt needed replacing.

Thats the issues I seemed to have picked up on.

    HTH

    Cheers Ean

2008 model year was one of the good ones

There may not be much wrong with the unit you are looking at, or more correctly, not much may have gone wrong with it.

My view is that the 2008 build was about the best; the 2009 have some of the D4 variations that LR was experimenting with to see how they would work out - not all did. As such the 2008 units were about as good as they got. The problems of the 2005 and 2006 units were for the most part resolved by 2008. Fortunately those of us with the early units can incorporate most of the fixes so the whole fleet can run OK these days.

By 2008, the front suspension was sorted out, however as above, it is probably about time to rebuild. Also as above, you should figure on new oil is the front and rear differentials, the transfer case and of course the transmission. If you figure on towing and tough use, you may as well do the metal pan mod as you will get your money back on that. When you change the oil in each of the components, look at what comes out; it usually tells a story.

If you have air compressor problems, first change out the desiccant material as that seems to be more often than not the problem these days. LR seems to have finally got the compressor to run at least to past warranty.

There is also brake pads and rotors to consider - they tyres are of course easy to determine but not cheap to purchase. You might be looking at an alternator and a battery as neither lasts forever.

Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

Anyone able to suggest a mechanic in Melb who knows D3s?

Also, to save me the call, can someone estimate for me the price of steering gear rebuild, and oil change to diffs, transfer case and transmission?

    Thanks again

    Hi Scott,
What area are you from? Putting your suburb in your location can help when asking for things. If your from South Eastern suburbs, Ritter in Burwood, Rover Land in Ferntree Gully or AMV in Ringwood. I use Rover Land In FTG. (on my D2)

G'day Scott, I have an 06 D3 TDV6 and just had the control arms and bushes replaced.
    Cost was $1700.
They were replaced with D4 parts.
There was no great urgency to have these replaced, but it was noticed at my last service (65K) that they were in need of attention so I decided to get it soughted.

I too, asked my LR specialist what else to expect.
    He did mention-
Change the gearbox oil (a must) at 80K (approx $1000)
Compressor last to approx 80K ($1200 new compressor, has new relay's and will require update on ECU) BTW, I have seen them on Ebay reasonably cheap.
    Hand brake motor ??
Air suspension (approx $1200 a pair)

From what I was told, these are the big ticket items and once replaced, your car should be almost bullet proof???

BTW, I am no expert on these buggies, and have had mine for about 6 months. Just sharing a bit of info that I have learnt so far.

Overall, I am very pleased with mine mate.
Absolute pleasure to drive on and off the road!

    Good luck!
    Daz
