Question D4 heat exchanger install - anyone done?

    Hi all,

Looking for a hot water solution in my 2010 3.0 D4. Has anyone installed a Helton (or similar) heat exchanger unit in their D4 yet? From a casual glance it looks like the heater pipes might be a PITA to get to...

I'd say no, I tried it in my D2 and it didn't work, I think if the vehicle has climate control, it won't work very well.

Hrrrm that is disappointing. I was thinking with the climate control set to HIGH ("HI" on the temperature display) that it just opens the heater valve up all the way, so it would be ok.

How is your gas heater working out? Does it get the water hot enough for a nice steamy shower?

    Thanks,

Yes it does, we had a mishap while away at easter, I didn't seal it at the gas join properly, but it's all good now, this is the second unit we have had in the camper, the previous one was a Bosch hot water unit, it didn't work all that well, but this new one is great.

The reason we put this in the camper was because I couldn't get the Helton to work in our old D2, I tried every possible way, I even took a mates Twine out of his 100 series Cruiser and tried it as well and it didn't work in the D2, the Helton work in his cruiser, so it wasn't the unit.

The Helton worked perfectly in our old Explorer too.
