There are many on the UK site disco4.com,that have gone from the 3.L 6 speed to the 8 speed.

Not many (if any ) complaints.

Don't assume 8 speeds is necessarily bad.
And dont assume its necessarily good either....

The 6 speed, once moving is in 5th or 6th....

The 8 speed once moving is in 7th or 8th....

    Gear D4 6 speed D4 8 speed
    8 na 0.667
    7 na 0.839
    6 0.69 1
    5 0.867 1.285
    4 1.14 1.667
    3 1.52 2.106
    2 2.34 3.143
    1 4.17 4.714
    FINAL 3.54 3.21

Some slight benefits, but not a lot to be noticeable...

Very different in a manual.... Torque converter covers the rest...

Only benefit I see is marginal improvement downhill Low 1st, and running at very high speed unloaded.

I cant see a problem with or without the 8 speed box...

I'm just pointing out - dont feel good / bad / superior / inferior if you do or dont have it...

    BAD DECISION LRA

I was at a Range Rover Club meeting last night, hosted at Purnell motors and they confirmed the 2.7lt is no longer able to be ordered, only available stock left.

Personally I think it is a bad move as the price premium of the 3.0lt will knock out many buyers and as discussed over and over on this and other forums the 19in rims required on the 3.0 D4 will put other off, rightly or wrongly.

They can not simply drop the price of the 3.0lt dramatically, so they can slot in an 8 sp without annoying everyone who has purchased a 3.0 D4 in the past few years so I am confused.

I have a 2009 D3 with 70,000 km and will hold that for a few more years and most likely would have stuck with the 2.7lt when I renewed it as I have been very happy with it so far.

$70 K and some change was my all in price and I was pretty comfortable with that as I think it offered very good value compared with other options. I was new to LR so had no particular preconceptions.

At $90 k+ I think the value is looking much thinner. I did not buy a nearly 3 tonne 4wd to try and imitate a sports car, I do not tow big vans or boats so the extra power is not really that relevant to me. Additionally as I have never felt under powered in the 2.7TDV6 I am not placing a lot of value in that extra grunt.

Hopefully LRA will alter the line up again by the time I am purchasing, but if I was in the market in the next 12 -24 months I think I would struggle with my purchasing decision, before it was simple - D4 2.7 !

In the UK where the 2.7 doesn't meet EU5 emisson standards, the 2.7 in base models was replaced by a lower power 3.0 so perhaps Oz will get that too. I don't know what brakes are being fitted to those lower power vehicles.

I agree with the comments on the last few posts, however, I can't see that Landrover would do anything to jeopardize sales.
If they were to introduce the lesser powered 3.0Lt, I would imagine that it would come with smaller brakes to suit 18" wheels...........and the 2.7Lt transmission.

If I am wrong, sales would drop and Gordon (GOE) would have to quit his day job and concentrate on importing & selling the Compomotive 18" rims

    Cheers, Craig

I have a new salesman chasing me for a new D4...I would be interested only for the world wide warranty so I would be covered in the middle of nowhere in the middle of Oz..our D3 has only done 49000km ...16000km of that over the ditch..and are intending to bring it back over this winter..

But if I could get a new D4 2.7 on my terms I would consider it...here is his reply...

"I need to get the order in ASAP to try and get it here for September. It could be October so the sooner the better!
They are not deleting TDV6 we just don’t get allocated any from factory. They are a big seller overseas, we tend to focus on the 3.0. This is why there is the wait as we have to grab a build slot, without any allocation for one.
So to answer your question unless Land Rover is going to do something we haven’t been advised of next year or in the future there won’t be a run out. New Discovery has been allocated for 2016 which will 2017 here in Australasia."

So take what you want out of that ..but if I wanted to order a new D4 I can get one but it will be Sept or Oct before I see it so a bit late for the top end this winter!!!!

Looks as though we will be staying with our D3 in the short term..

It has been fun seeing what I can get out of LR though!
I can’t do anything about the timing for delivery sorry.

I recon the replacement will be the lower powered 3.0l as used in UK.

It will probably have the larger brakes.

The 2.7 was a good seller, they won't want to lose that market.

After doing lots of emails to LR, I found out that the UK GS and Commercial models have the same brakes as all 3 litres.
I reckon a standard TDV6 with the 3 litre and smaller brakes would be an absolute hit.....but that would be too smart for LR to build that vehicle.

LR could be getting ready for a D5. I just got a D4 last week so did a bit of hunying around to see what might, or might not be coming. Found an article that says the D5 is being developed and that it will be more "down market" then the D4. See 2016 Land Rover Discovery 5 / LR5 details emerge

Guess we have to wait and see.
