    Reverse Camera

Does anyone know where I can get either a factory reverse camera (not the MOST type) or know which aftermarket camera fits in the space provided in the tailgate handle of the D4? I've seen a million cheap eBay cameras that replace one of the number plate lights, but I want mine to look factory..

    Cheers Rob.

    two flavours of factory camera

Some guys just purchase a new Land Rover D4 rear hatch handle assembly and replace the old one with it.

Note that there are apparently two part numbers of rear camera handle. One is for the system that also has the sensors in the side exterior mirrors and the other part number is the simpler system where there is just the rear backup camera. I presume that is the one you will want as the cameras are somehow different and the complex setup camera only works with the side sensor system.

Yes that sounds right bbyer.. I think the complex system is the one hooked up by the fiber optic loop.

    Hi Rob,

I looked into this when my D4 was new, and the person to contact is "Wiggs" on D3.co.uk. Last time I checked with him (June 2010) the non-surround version was just under $AUD200 landed. In comparison to this, the local RRP from a LR dealer is close to $AUD500.

I have an aftermarket "number plate light replacement" one from eBay and the only thing 2 things I don't like are:

    1. The new hole/lens for the light to shine through is significantly dimmer and is not as symetrical when it shines on the number plate.
    2. I can't see the edge of the bumper in the camera - it is off by around 2 cm

I am going to remount the original bumper bar lens, and cut the black plastic from the sides of aftermarket version and mount it on the blanking plate where the factory camera would sit, which is a couple of cm closer to the centre of the car, and a couple of cm further back. All that needs to be done is a small hole drilled into the blanking plate for the wire to go through, and some adhesive. If it all goes wrong I guess it is only $20 for a new camera (and $200 for a new blanking plate. :P).

Because the whole assembly sits underneath the tailgate handle it is very hard to see the camera in the first place, and looks virtually identical to a factory mount - no little metal plates/brackets or hanging off bits. Attached are 2 photos - one from "level" height, and one from way down below.

    Anyway, hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Edwin.

Just a minor correction, the forum site to which eddomak is referring is: Disco3.co.uk .

I don't know if he still has them, but I bought my D4 handle with reversing camera from Slimer on that site.

    Best Wishes,

    Reverse Camera

    Hi Learner
What system do you use to connect the camera to the original screen or are you running it to a aftermarket / additional screen?
I have asked my LR dealer if I can patch into the standard screen but they have no idea.
I have the full colour screen without camera's back or front sensors.
I don't want to run an additional screen if I don't have to and had not thought of replacing the whole handle as you have done, a nice piece of lateral thinks.

    Cheers

    Thanks eddomak,

I had a look at the handle & removed the blanking plate. I think I'll be doing the same as you, already have the camera to suit.

    Hi Guys,
I too tried the tail light camera, it worked but didn't give me vision of my tow ball.
I bought a camera from Frankies Auto Electrics in South Nowra NSW for $90 which is gloss black and has a cable running through the centre of a threaded shaft which is used to mount the camera.
I took the blank plate out drilled a 1/4 inch hole in it for the threaded shaft to go through, then used a pc of flat aluminium Approx 10mm wide x 40mm long drilled a 1/4 inch hole in it.
Fitted camera threaded shaft through the plastic blank plate(which was clipped back into the handle) then thru the aluminium plate which is fitted on the inside of the handle, then fitting the nut clamped it all together, the camera when fitted has a different viewing angle so I can see the tow ball and looks like a factory one.
If anyone is interested I can take a photo and find the part # of the camera, still have the tail light camera if anyone wants it!
