There are generally only 3 things to look for with the D3 as they are generally very reliable and they are:

1: Suspension compressor ensure its not too loud and that it lifts the car up in a reasonable period of time
2: Electronic park brake check that it engages without any noise usually a grinding noise
3: Lower control arms you will notice the steering is a bit loose and rebound over bumps isn't as soft as it should be

But get these checked in a pre purchase inspection and you will be fine they are seriously the best 4wd on the roads

These are generally only $1k each to fix, it is also recommended that you get the auto transmission serviced generally by 100,000kms, LR won't do this so check for a local LR mechanic who know what they are doing.

The engine is very reliable ( unlike modern Toyota and Nissan diesels)'but ensure as with any car that it has had all of it's servicing done on time and enjoy!

    Cheers

Yeah I can second that. With the lower control arms you can test them really easily by applying the brakes really hard, suddenly and then taking them off quickly, if you hear a bug knock or thud you'll want to ask 2grand off for arms.

For the love of god don't get the V6.

All noise no power, if you ever want to tow anything you'll regret it forever.

    Get the diesel.

Dirtdawg, appreciate your input, but will be towing a 23ft caravan.
