    Brake issues when towing

Hello everyone we have joined the world of Landrover recently with the purchase of a 2009 D3 2.7TDV6.
We love the car but I have noticed that when towing my(empty) box trailer with cruise control enabled the rear brakes will start to pulse giving the feeling of driving over edge ripples or fine corrugations.
This has happened at both 80kmh and at 100 on two separate occasions.
The rear brake pads get very hot and smell pretty bad, at least i think its the rear..
If the vehicle is stopped and then driven away the issue seems to disappear.
Does anybody have an explanation for this?
    Thanks in advance.

Just browsing the forums and noticed that led trailer lights have some or several issues, my trailer has leds. I dont seem to be able to relocate the thread could someone maybe point it out? cheers

How do you know it is the rear brakes? Sounds preaty weird to me. Even on a D3 I can't think of how the rear brakes could be actuated independent of the front? Maybe a problem from the terrain response system ?
    Regards

Sounds like the trailer assist is kicking in. If the car detects the trailer not tracking right it will apply the brakes gently to correct it. Is there any chance the trailer was unstable? AFAIK each wheel can be braked independently.

Sounds like something to do with the ABS,maybe.Need to get it sorted as it isn't right.

As you are in Brisbane,MR are the go,maybe give them a call,if the vehicle is not under warranty.

    Try something simple..

Go somewhere quiet - Unplug trailer cable - Drive...

If trailer is still back there and nothing else is going wrong I'd suggest a wiring issue between vehicle and trailer

Do you have a electronic brake controller or do you know if the car has been wired for a brake controller?

If you have LED trailer lights then the indicators will probably flicker continually.

Greame's suggestion of a EPB problem is possible. Have you had any squeeling/grinding noise when using the EPB?

Thank you all for the feedback.
-Yes it happens without the trailer plugged
    -No noises from park brake
-Rear brakes are where the 'hot brake' smell is coming from
-Leds are not affecting indicator operation

Im going to try and see if the problem occurs this weekend (with a full trailer load) so hoping to isolate the issue further...
Does anyone know at what Kms the EPB issue is likely to occur?
    I am up to 72000.
