    Traxide UCI160 installation

    I am installing a Taxide kit D to my D3. I am following the instructions and almost completed the install.

    I do have a question of what others have done to protect the 6B&S cable where it penetrates the firewall and the cables on the engine side before they connect to earth stud/second battery...also where the cable snakes past the rear bar and cross member.

    I did not read anything in the instructions about what to do with these points of concern. Any advice greatly appreciated. I had left an email for Tim..but no response..and I cant wait.

    Hi Jim and I can’t find your e-mail.

    With the cable coming through the firewall, once you have pulled the slack back into the cab ( and to the rear cargo area ), when you put the insulation back in place, the cables ae held in place so they are fine.

    At the rear, the cable is only exposed to mud and water and is already covered with an outer plastic sheath, so again, that’s all that is needed.

    As you would have noticed, the twin 6B&S is double insulated (the inner red & black then the outer black sheath). It seems to be accepted that this is sufficient protection where it goes through the firewall and rear cross member plus worst case scenario there's the 50A breaker but it does auto reset. I tried adding some heat shrink to it but it was too difficult to thread it through the firewall.

    For the engine bay I added some split corrugated conduit. Just happened to be in Ray's Outdoor which had a good range of sizes and cheaper than the other outlets. Not a place I expected to find it.

    Thanks for the response...so..is its OK to leave cables without further protection when the car will be used for remote touring over corrugations.

    Also..have people found any issues with bulldust/water ingress with firewall penetration? If so..I might have to get one of my kids to put sealant on the engine bay side of the hole..as I have fat hand syndrome!

    Hi again Jim and if you have the cover on the auxiliary battery compartment, you will not have any problems with dust.

    But if you want to seal the cable point, get a long screwdriver and some mastic or silastic and putty up around the cable.

    To date I know of only one instance where water got in through this hole and that only occurred because the cover was not on the battery compartment and the vehicle was driven in to deep water, way over the correct wadding depth.
