You could always take the 3.0l with the rear wheel carrier and if you found that it was 'excess to requirements' then you could remove the carrier and the extra tank/s, sell them and return car to standard tank and standard underslung spare wheel.

You really need to workout how much a pain the rear wheel carrier would be. In our case our car gets used for the school run by SWMBO and I'm sure she would hate having to swing it out of the way every time she opened the boot. The kids also open and use the boot and I'm not sure how they would cope with a RWC.
If you are doing heaps of touring then probably not so much of an issue.
Go with the 3.0
The wheel carrier doesn't make the car that long. Lots or LRs have had the wheel carrier on the back, D1, D2s and Defenders. There are carriers that have a link to the back door and swing with the door, haven't seen on on a D3/4 but the defenders certainly have them.
The ability to buy fuel on the cheap cycle out ways any inconvenience.
Also, ability to go straight through between cities is a bonus - the std tank won't do Melb-Adl etc
If SWMBO is going to do most of the driving and it will spend most of its time around the city and doing the shopping and will call the NRMA is she gets a flat, then you don't want the rear carrier, she will hate it unless she is the adventurer type.
If you plan on doing long range touring at all you will love the tank and carrier. And if you ever get a flat and need to change a tyre and you have a standard car you will curse the day you didn't buy the one with the carrier. The standard set up for accessesing the spare on these cars was designed by a madman. Apart from anything else you are almost certain to bugger up the winch and have to replace it after you have tried it.
A little off thread, whats the cost of the extended warranty, my warranty is up in 3 months. Is the value there?
