    Gordon,

Are your rock sliders as good as the pro speed ones? The demonstration video from pro speed is very impressive!

As strong? Yes, but the video isn't that impressive if you think a little about what you're watching - on mud/grass. And one should never use the bars to lift or drag the vehicle. It's not that the bars can't handle it - they will. But if you deform the sill, the doors won't seal (or even shut if you're unlucky).

    Cheers,

    Gordon

gg - any plans for a hidden winch mount?

I'm not keen on a bull bar but would love a winch.

    Is this for a D3?

I've seen a D4 with a hidden winch mount and no bar.

There are a few available already if you need it urgently. I made one for myself (on my 2009 D3), but never went through the process of seeing if it would fit all model years. It's something I'll get around to - somewhere between the rear bar, the fuel-tank guard, and the Freelander sump guard.

    Hello all,

    My name's Olly from ProSpeed.

I'm not 100% sure of the posting rules and regs of this forum, so if I am contravening any, I apologise. I just believe that we have arrived at a point in this thread where we need a polite voice!

Humbly, we have over a decade of competition experience in Off Road Racing, Off Road trials, and the World Rally Championship. Both competing and preparing. We design and manufacture a variety of products for competition from FIA certified Roll Cages to underbody protection. We genuinely don't make a habit of designing and selling things just for the sake of it.

With regard to our underbody protection.

What you must remember is that this is not a competition vehicle. A Discovery is an expedition vehicle. That puts a focus on 100% reliability. If you are out in the middle of nowhere, you need belt, braces, and a little bit in reserve just in case. This is a modern car with a lot going on underneath it, and not a massive amount of ground clearance in comparison to many off roaders.

Our underbody protection is designed to stop anything getting damaged, and also very importantly, help you to not get stranded. That comes from two angles.

    1) You're confident of your level of protection and as such you can carry and keep momentum during any difficult off road sections.

    2) One of the most important in our minds, you have a continuous skid from front to back. If you're beached on an obstacle on your front guard being able to skid over that obstacle from front to back is a great asset. No dropping off in the middle, no catching on leading edges, just one seamless system from front to back.

If I'm being honest, I think the main reason no-one has made a centre guard for the Discovery 3 and 4 is that it is very difficult to make it strong enough to be of any use. You can actually lift the car off the ground with a jack under our centre guard! But it only weighs in at 36kgs.

    As for the Rock Sliders.

I would disagree that what they can do is not very impressive. I know I would and should as they are our design! But, we were adamant that they needed to genuinely support the whole weight of the vehicle if jacked with a High Lift jack, anywhere along their length. And also be able to be confidently used as a recovery point if required. Not something you would want to do every day, but if you need to strop around them, it's only going to be because you have no other options, and you really need to. When you do, they'll take the hammer. The important thing to remember with the rock sliders is that the strength is inherent in the actual part itself, not the body shell of the car. Whatever point loading or pulling force you put through them, they don't transmit that through to the body shell, they actually spread the force evenly through the rock slider itself. The doors actually seal on our slider, not the body shell, and we guarantee you can push and pull as much as you like - they won't bend or move, or cause any damage to the sills - that's why they're there.

Apologies if this post is a little long winded!!! It's just that we put a lot of time, effort and technology into our products and we're very proud of what they do.

We only want to build the best products money can buy, but we never want to build products just for you guys to waste your money on.

I know getting our gear over to you is a big hurdle, but that is something we are working to overcome with Mulgo Expedition Centre in New South Wales.

Thanks for reading (if you got this far before going to sleep!)

    Olly

    To clarify Olly,

When I say "not that impressive" regarding your slider videos, the context is in relation to other D3/D4 sliders that are correctly made (obviously with mine in mind). They will all perform similarly. And they should all spread the load applied to the bottom of the slider evenly across the sill. I'm not sure how your slider can replace the main seal and mating points of the body-shell and door, perhaps you're referring to the secondary seal?

Anyway, apologies if you took offence - main point is both the ProSpeed and GOE products are alloy sliders + bars that will withstand the weight of the car. Which is the question I was asked.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

    Thanks Olly,

I am genuinely interested in your rock sliders. I've tried to find a price for them delivered to Perth WA and looked on the Mulgo website where they say they currently don't stock any prospeed products. Are you able to give me a price?

    Regards

    Oli (another one)
