On a Prado yes... Great tyre.
Very robust but noisy and wear a bit quicker.
Nice offroad, need to add a little gap on road and in the wet a bit of extra care required.
Just for something totally different here's another tyre question.
Out of interest has anyone here tried the 265-70 R17's Good Year MT/R's with Kevlar on their D3 or D4?
cheers,
Terry

Hi Terry,
I havent run the MTRs on a disco but ran them on my old Patrol. I have mixed feelings about them. When new they were great. Good balance between on and off road manners and could not fault them in the bush. You could lower the pressures and they where brilliant. But as they got a little wear they scolloped badly and droned really badly on road. My biggest concern was the wear rate in the heat. I fitted them when living in Victoria and they held up wear wise quite well in the cooler road temps. However when we moved to Townsville the higher road temps destroyed the tyres in a couple of months (they were about 50% worn at this stage). I complained to Goodyear in Townsville and the manager said that road temps in North QLD are around 70 deg C in summer and the MTRs don't like it. He said Goodyear are aware of the problem.
In conclusion, I would only get them again if I could afford to put them on spare rims for dedicated bush trips.
cheers, Nino
I had them in 19" on my L322 Rangie.
As they got older they got quite a bit noisier, so we have gone back to a more A/T style of tyre.
I had 2 sets of rims, one for the MTRs and one for the A/Ts, but I got very lazy and never swapped back to the A/Ts after trips so ended up running on the MTRs all year.
If it weren't for the noise, I'd still have them on. Never got a puncture in 25,000kms, and they aired down nicely for sand work.
So gentlemen were these the relatively new Kevlar belted MT/R's or the earlier model.
Basically I'm looking to replace the existing STT's with a even larger and more capable second set of tyres basically just for off road usage. I'll keep the AT3's for everyday driving.
cheers,
Terry

The MT/Rs are great when new but 'go off' quickly.
255s are also a more common fitment on a D3/4.

Mine had "Kevlar" written on the side, but they were bought about 4 or 5 years ago.... so not exactly new.
If I remember right the MT/R's were considerably updated only about two years ago with a totally new asymmetric thread design and new build construction including Kevlar belting where it had not been previously.
From what I remember they were a completely new tyre compared to the previous model.
Re 255's in a 17" size they don't sell them here in Oz and I'm after a much larger tyre than standard for off road. ...

SubscriberI saw one spiked on a D4 over Christmas at Kosciusko. No body else had a problem up MT Pinnibar but tiny tear in sidewall from a stick I guess just before the Murray crossing.
It seemed to me the sidewalls were very thin, but I guess could happen to anyone. Luckily they were almost worn out.

you mean these ones terry
