D3 Airconditioning compresor
Little whine when accelerating heard a few days ago, Little worried it might be my transmission or diffs. Nice gents at Rittas had a look today. It is the bearing in the AC compressor. Doctors use a stethoscope to listen to your heart or lungs. Top effort by a Ritta’s gent with a beast of a D2 with a large screw driver used as a stethoscope!
Question replace the whole compressor or just the bearing?
DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - aircon compressor clutch bearing. DIY? and a few other posts suggest the bearing can be replaced. I will probably take the whole compressor give it my 2005 D3 SE with 260,000km and is wanted for a lot longer till about 500,000km or more .
My post is more a hypothetical “can we repair rather than replace”. A helpful forum gent responded to my replacement of an alternator 50,000 km or so ago that I should have considered repair is prompting this question.

Replacement part from UK over 1K. The work to remove and replace about the same. Ouch. Glad this is not a common issue given the cost. If i get another 260,000km or eight years ( my D3 is 2005 version) out of the new AC compressor I guess it is only 0.007692c per kilometre or about 7 cents a day
Feel better looking at the long term view over the short term pain.

I think you can get the whole lot (Compressor, Dryer etc) for about $800U.S. delivered. When my Aircon went recently I considered doing this but it was covered by warranty so they had the final say on what was replaced.
