Spare wheel winch gets stuck

I don't know about the plastic gears bit but the main problem is that there's a internal spiral that the cable sits in. The cable needs to be under tension so it follows the spiral.
If the cable is loose, it's free to choose whichever route along the spiral it likes until it doubles up & then jams.

Thanks for your replies. As Caver mentioned, can it be taken apart and the cable winding sorted? Has anyone done this?

I know I haven't left mine without a load on it, I have 2 set of wheels, one with mud tyres, so do this procedure from time to time. The last time, as mentioned it started to get stuck half way down.

I've pulled one apart & got it working OK again but I didn't refit it to a car.
I removed the original rivets holding it together & replaced them with bolts/nuts so I don't know if they'd interfere with fitment in the car.

I removed mine for a long range tank. just found it under my kids spare wheels. yours if you want it

Thanks for that - unfortunately though it is not possible to always keep weight on the cable if you need to drive the car without the spare attached.

I have found that you can slowly wind it in with no weight but as soon as it loads up (cable starting to kink) and then back off half a turn and pull the cable down. The main issue is that people continue to wind when winder loads up.

I have done this a few times without major issue but kid gloves are needed and no force must be used at all.

The above process needs to happen a few times until the cable is up.

I wonder if they updated/upgraded the winch mechanism in the MY13 with the eyelet instead of a hex; surely there must be some gain for the extra pain involved in using the winch...

I took my winch off today as I couldn't pull the spare up -
It was loose when we bought the car and didn't realise till the car was making some bumping noises and tracked it down to the tyre not sitting nice and tight.

Anyway... Someone had already done the fix on ours before, cable was kinked so they relocated the stopped a bit deeper into the wheel.

Issue I have it's working when not under load, when under load it slips / but looking at that PDF I didn't see the two washers when it was apart so could be that. Who ever designed this thing wasn't a good designer thats for sure - even the bit which goes through the wheel (coat hanger thingy) was a spring type ING ute not this chunk of metal. Easy to feed through the wheel etc.

However.. Another point no one has mentioned and I don't know if anyone may simply not have this information - I have a little bit of paper in the spare jack area which shows you the procedure of changing the spare, and it's mentioning lifting the car using the air suspension, then jacking the car up using the car jack and then lowering back once tyre is on the floor to give it slack, repeat in reverse order to assemble.. Keeps tension on the cable this way without need for two people or special work around as.. Have you guys seen this???
