    Spare wheel winch gets stuck

My spare wheel winch on my 2005 D3 only winds down half way. Does anyone how it can be fixed.

    Cheers Andrew

Do a search and have a look at the FAQ. Is a known issue and can be fixed if you want to pull the winch apart.

If it is wound up with no tension it gets stuck.
Needs taking apart or a new one.

Just replaced ours, cost a couple of hundred dollars. Advice is to keep tension on the cable when winding it up. Mechanic reckons they can sometimes be freed by working up and down with a load on the cable, but didn't work for us.

    Gday...

I had this happen to me the first time I had a flat. I did not want to muck around getting the flat back in the carrier so just chucked it into the back to take it to the tyre joint.

When I then went to wind the cable up so it wouldn't drag on the ground, it only wound less than half way . I figured it needed weight, so I just mucked around getting it to move downward a bit and then hooked the tow shank onto it, to give it weight. I then wound it up without a problem.

I guess it just needs to have weight on it to go back in the 'winder mechanism' correctly.

    cheers - John

I have a spare one off my D3 (removed to fit LPG tank). You can have it if you want. Only trouble is I am in Brisbane.

What timing......I was email a RACQ Roadside Assist Memo just a few hours ago.

He is the shorten version that was in the email, I also have a PDF of the full document.

They also mention in the PDF that winding the cable up without weight on it damages the plastic cogs inside the mechanism.

Please read the attached ‘Land Rover Spare Tyre Winch Damage’ memo. The spare tyre winch mechanism on a Land Rover Discovery 3 & 4 will be damaged if you use a drill or impact gun to operate it. It can also be damaged if you wind it up without a wheel in the cradle.

Please ensure you never use a drill or impact gun on any vehicle that secures the spare tyre under the vehicle with a winch mechanism.

Always put the flat tyre back in the cradle under the vehicle. Never put the flat tyre inside the vehicle.

If you have any questions, please call me.

    Thank you,

    Further to my previous post...

I think part of the problem is access to the spare wheel with the tow bar in place. It is very hard to get the spare in or out if you don't remove the towbar. (It can be done with a bit of cursing and swearing).

This encourages over-extension of the cable when lowering the spare so the tyre can be manouvered around the towbar. When replacing the spare, there is a far amount of slack cable to be wound up after the hook is placed in the middle of the rim.

While design quirks sometimes equate to charm, this one equates to an expensive pain in the bum, particularly as when using the spare you are going to incur some cost due to tyre damage as well!

here is all the text from the memo minus the pics.......

    [QUOTE]
Ref: Land Rover Discovery Spare Tyre Winch Damage.

Toavoid expensive damage to the spare tyre winch on a Land Rover Discovery 3 or4, please read the following advice.

Thisadvice also applies to any vehicle that uses a winch mechanism to secure thespare tyre under the vehicle.

Thespare tyre winch is operated from inside the rear of the vehicle. A rubbercovering cap as seen below is removed to access the winch bolt. Look closely atthis cap. There is a symbol above the Land Rover badge that indicates NOT touse an impact gun or drill.

Ifan impact gun or drill is used to operate the spare tyre winch, the winchmechanism will be damaged and it is not a serviceable part. A new winchassembly is approx $500.00

NEVER USE AN IMPACT GUN ORDRILL ON THIS WINCH BOLT.

Itshould only be operated slowly by hand with a suitable wheel brace, or a socketand ratchet.

CAUTION -There is another way that this winch can be damaged.

Damage to the sparetyre winch mechanism will also occur if the winch is wound up without a wheelin the cradle.

Without downward pressure, (the weightof the wheel) the cable will bind up in the winch drum and damage the internalplastic gears. The flat tyre must be placed back in the spare tyrecradle under the vehicle.

DO NOTPLACE THE FLAT TYRE INSIDE THE VEHICLE.

If for some otherreason, the flat tyre is not placed back under the vehicle, the loose cable& cradle hanging from the winch can be secured to the under body with zipties to prevent it from swinging around while the vehicle is driven.

NEVER WIND UP THE SPARE TYREWINCH WITHOUT A WHEEL IN THE CRADLE.
