That design is quite possibly some of the worst engineering I've encountered so far on my Disco...

To top it off I've gone through the numerous warnings in the manual and none of them say the mechanism can be damaged if it's wound up unloaded - in fact on page 242 it describes the process for rewinding the wheel hoist without the spare wheel being fitted in the hoist......

Either legend or perhaps fact that the spare wheel/tyre mechanism & tow hitch was designed by the LR apprentice on his first day on the job AND he was having an off day AND it was a Friday AND he was drunk & stoned!

So, all in all it works pretty well considering.http://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/smilies/wink.gif

    Hi There,
I took my vehicle to a tyre shop that shall remain nameless, they wound down the flat spare with an impact gun then proceeded to wind the empty winch up with the impact gun. This was accompanied by apparently some sparks, I wasn't present for this ceremony however when I got back to the tyre shop the spare, fixed I might add was in the back of the vehicle with the winding mechanism which bless them they had tried to fix, without success. They gave me $100 towards a new one telling me this would easily cover the cost of new one............... little did I know!!!

    Cheers Marty.

As much as a pig of a design the thing is I was pleasantly surprised how smoothly it worked when I swapped my spare to a GOE spare. Its got a very good gearing ratio compared to some Ive used on other vehicles, shame the later D4s cant have a normal socket to undo them.

They did it to stop what happened to Nomad9!!!!
I can see that the gearing of the thing would fry the mechanism with a rattle gun on it

Ahh yeah i suppose thats a fair decision.

I think when mines due for tyres I'll stick the spare in the boot and ask them to put it back there.

    Cheers
