Thread: Ark pak battery box

It seems that it has only a 6 amp DC to DC charger so will take all day to recharge a battery from running a small fridge overnight and may not fully recharge if not driving long days. A voltage sensitive relay connected with suitably sized wire would recharge a battery in much less time, being able to take advantage of much higher current available directly from the alternator.

the other benefit of a dual battery system over a portable setup is there is no loss of cargo area. having had both i'm an advocate of the dual battery system, the only negative is the loss of portability.

I reckon these battery boxes are way overpriced. Then you have to purchase a battery on top. You wont get much change out o$700 and you don't have a chrging system. For the same money, almost, you could get a Traxide charging system with a take off for the rear of the Disco to charge the battery whilst travelling. I have built a battery box which has a 120 amp battery in it out of marine ply. This powers an Engle mt45 whilst travelling. To make it more useful I have an mppt regulator attached that enables me to remove the box and plug in 120 watt solar panels when camped. This takes care of the fridge. I don't have an inverter, but I'm sure a pure sine wave could be fitted in. I think the ArkPak has a modified sine wave inverter which isn't much use for lap tops, drills, etc.

Just under $500
But to make it work in my D3 I need a $99 12v to Ark Pak I could use 240v inverter but !
Also only the 12v and 240v input go to the inbuilt smart charger that prolongs the battery life!

So it is not cheap

Saves dual battery wiring for ny 9 week top end trip starting July

It is now at my shack which is remote off grid and the 20 year old gas fridge dies so it is powering the Waeco in the shack kitchen,
Can't do this with a dual battery.

Well at least as long as the vehicle is there and I can get it reasonably close to the shack. I have a 6 metre cord with Anderson plugs on each end, I plug into the rear Anderson from my Traxide kit and run the lead through the window I then have an inverter with an Anderson plug. A multiple cigarette lighter socket block with an Anderson plug, and a pair of alligator clips with an Anderson plug. So I can run multiple appliances and my fridge etc off my car inside the house.

I set all this up both for camping, but also for blackouts and storms etc. I figure with 190 liters of diesel on board and dual batteries I can use my car as a generator to top up the batteries and run a fridge and basic stuff for at least a week maybe two if necessary.
