I'm wondering if my current white smoke is from a slow build-up of oil in the intercooler that only gets blown out with the occasional use of a heavy right foot rather than directly from a turbo at the time. There's always some compression blow-by and even though most of the oil is condensed back to the sump, some oil gets through to the intake tract. IIRC the D2's TD5 I/C was meant to be cleaned every 100K kms although at 80K kms it was very clean but possibly due to the engine being frequently worked close to its maximum output.

There is a modified oil drain pipe for the turbo that fixes the problem and takes about 2 hours to fit.

If the car is under warranty it'll be covered.
I just had a call from my dealer (60k service) who is replacing this drain pipe today after I suggested it was using a bit of oil (the electronic indicator was down to about 2/3rds' - that is it has used about 1/3rd).
Thanks to all who have been posing about this topic

Anyway I asked if the turbo was damaged at all or if seals were likely to fail in the near future? he said no... so question is is there any concerns about the 2nd turbo? I have read plenty here on turbos giving up (potentially due to this problem??).

Should I be concerned? Unfortunately I do not alway drive the Disco all the time (SWMBO ) so I cant tell if there is a smoke issue. I can say at night I can see some smoke in the person behinds headlights...

When I turn right at a set of lights on my way home late at night and there is a car behind,I always see a puff of smoke when I take off. Also sometimes during the day as well..
But then my disco has 365000 k's and is a D1.

    cheers

Mine's had the drain pipe upgrade and I'm monitoring the situation. Early indications are encouraging very little or no smoke under heavy acceleration. Especially encouraging since the dealer warned me not to expect the problem to go away for a week or two.

Don't get too stressed out by some smoke at night in the following cars headlights. This test makes the problem look worse than it is; they are diesels after all.

The smoke I was talking about was at a level where there was no doubt it was more than a bit of "diesel puff" under the hammer. It was a cloud.

    Anyway so far so good.

Have been following these threads. I do drive like a Nanna generally , I only only give it curry every now and then when I'm wondering how much smoke it will dump and because I figure it needs a blow through.

    Watching this thread with interest.
I had very similar with mine James, though not from day 1 - it started a few months after I bought the Disco (mine's only a 2.7 though). Turned out to be a missing plug in the air chamber - Barbagallos identified it and had to get the part in from England. Have not seen any sign of smoke since they fitted the plug (took them all of about 15 minutes).

Is anyone's air filter getting soaked with oil? Mine was found to be soaked at the time the 2nd turbo was replaced along with a valve in the inlet tract. 12 months later the filter is soaked again so I'm keen to discover whether this has been occurring elsewhere and whether the turbo oil drain pipe fitment is thought to fix the oil blow-back.

I suspect the oil is accumulating in the secondary turbo inlet tract, having got there from the turbo itself rather than from the engine breather. It would be a very sick engine if it had that much blow-by at only 100K kms.
