    White smoke, D4 3.0 TD

Found a D4 (3.0 TDSE) in a yard with 68K on the clock. Doing my homework so called the previous owner to ask about the vehicle history.
All services were undertaken by LR, a turbo was replaced 18 months ago under warranty ....
The only thing he mentioned that I am concerned about was that if the vehicle was stationary at lights for some time when taking off there would be a puff of white smoke out the back, not always but sometimes...... The white smoke appeared not when initially taking off but usually when the car changed into second. He explained this only occurred randomly.... and the puff of smoke could bee seen as cars drove through it. Anyone have any ideas what could be the cause of this ?

    It's reasonably normal.

There is a modified oil drain pipe for the turbo that fixes the problem and takes about 2 hours to fit.

If the car is under warranty it'll be covered.

Thanks for the info guys. If the vehicle has not had the replacement pipe fitted is it an easy fix or is it a dealer job? any ideas on cost involved.
The car would not be under warranty I believe.

If its in a car yard for sale then it would have warranty, not sure bout SA but in NSW it's 3 months or 5,000 km.
    Cheers,

Just be a bit careful with it, get it checked by LR. My RRS 3.0 had to have a total new engine replacement a little under a year go, all under warranty, after the dealer spent nearly six months off and on, trying without success to fix the white/blue smoke problem. Haven't heard of any other such radical cases, but I'd certainly be wary.

White occasional smoke is okay, blue/black smoke usually indicates a problem with the turbo on these vehicles.

If your worried, get it checked out.

Really....I always thought black smoke was over fuelling, blue was oil, and white was turbo ?

I have only had black on big sand climbs.

I don't want to ever see white.

I've got "white smoke when booted" disease and have had it since day one.

Have been following these threads. I do drive like a Nanna generally , I only only give it curry every now and then when I'm wondering how much smoke it will dump and because I figure it needs a blow through.

    Watching this thread with interest.
