D3 Steering vibration only when decelerating

    Hi there

    Just bought a 2005 D3 TDV6s with 140K on the clock...

Does anyone else experience a gnarly vibration in the steering wheel only when decelerating?

Also, does the S model have the electric diff lock controlled by DSC(?)?

    Thanks for your help

Can't personally help with the vibration.

All D3's have an "electrically operated" centre diff lock. Optionally some have the eLocker in the rear as well. There will be a large black box above the rear axle if you do. Both are automatically activated by the car when required, so no direct user control (although the various Terrain Response programs alter how sensitive it is). The DSC is separate, all D3's have it.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

I have a 2010 D4 with 80'000 and the same issue. Had the brakes redone twice on the advise I had warped disks. This is not the issue. I have no idea what it could be?

Used to own a big Suzuki, had the same problem. Quite a stink in the eighties about it.

Problem was when the tyres got towards the end of their life, and became a bit saw toothed. The back's went one way (wear under acceleration) and the front's 'tother (wear under braking). Under deceleration (as opposed to braking where the tyres are under load) the saw tooth caused the handlebars to oscilate severely.

I notice the D3 does wear the tyres as described, but I rotate wheels regularly to prevent uneven wear.

    Would rotating wheels help?

Just had my tyres rotated, balanced and aligned so not the issue. I have GG's with about 10K on them. I'm not ruling out tyres though. I know I have worn front steering bushes. Apparently this is normal. Im starting with this and then from my research here going on to check - front axle play, steering column bolt clamping, tie rod ends and ball joints. See what LR tell me.

    decelerating or braking?

Do you mean taking your foot off the accellerator or applying brake?

I have been down this road (both of the above at one time or another) but not with a D3 (ATM)..... it was in a Jap sports.

Under braking turned out to be a set of new OEM disk pads kept warping 2 pot disks (had new rotors and then came back so machined to try to fix)- fixed with 2nd Brake 'Hone' (and throw away new OEM pads) and replace with set of bendix - fixed it straight up never to return.

under deceleration was a bit more complicated with front bushes, engine and tranny mounts (tried)

Not sure if this is as relevant for the D3 as I haven't had it that long?

Good luck, it sure is a pain in the neck to have (bad) vibes at any time in a car.
