The rear air is nice to have but the front air in the D3/4 is very good and much better than Tojos.
The only difference you will notice from the front is a faster cooling with rear air.

I have a D3 SE. My kids complain bitterly how hot it gets in the rear seats. Looking at giving them personal 12v fans to give some relief.

Does anyone know if there a second condenser for the rear air or does it just run from the main unit? The reason I ask is I have noticed water drops behind the rear passenger wheel and having not driven through any water I'm hoping it's just condenser condensate.

I had a D3 without rear air and it was OK.
I now have a D4 with rear air & it is great.
The other advantage is that you can keep the car cool with low fan speeds.

I had the same dilemma with two Melbourne Dealers that are owned by the same people.
The one I wanted was elsewhere so I asked MLR if they could get it off the other dealer & they did - they even kept the price the same when they found out it had rear air.
    Cheers

The D3 is light years ahead in ride, comfort and capability (without modification). It's been great as a daily ride, tourer and offroad though we haven't pushed it yet. We wouldn't go back now, yes we've had some niggles but nothing I couldn't fix (I'm not a mechanic) but we also spent thousands on our Prado keeping it serviced. Like you we always wanted a LR and was looking at D2's until a good deal came up here in Darwin for the D3.

I see you've gone ahead with the purchase and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

It has a second evaporator in the rear, and the drain is near the rear wheel.Refrigerant pipes run to it under the vehicle. On the UK sites they have a lot of trouble with these pipes corroding through, never heard of it happening here, even on vehicles that do a lot of beach work.

Vehicles have changed in the last 30 years. Maybe kids have too.
Three of us kids used to sit in the back of the S1 SWB hard top, with all the gear, while we toured the country. What didn't fit in the back went on the roof or in the wooden trailer. The fourth one sat in the middle in the front as he was the youngest.None of the rear windows opened,it had HD rear springs so the ride was kind of harsh, roads were not that smooth in those days either.
Oh,we did have a cushion to sit on...
I remember the floor in the rear being that hot we couldn't put our bare feet on it.
Any complaints from us,and we got a good clip around the ear.

    How times have changed

I don't have the "rear air" in my 09 D4 but my kids have routinely turned off the standard 2nd row air outlets in the back of the centre console because they complain about them blowing too cold on their legs

All the more reason to have rear air. The second row passengers have their own air con unit & controls, so they can have as much or as little cold air as they want.

    Cheers, Craig
