Shouldn't make any difference - particularly at the kms the car has. If the turbos cannot handle various extremes or "normal driving" then Landrover needs to look at alternatives.

Did the engine go into restricted performance mode?
My 2009 3.0 D4's primary turbo from time to time gets a sticky actuator that results in such a whine at the same time as going into restricted performance mode. I clear the fault codes (usually a set of 3 regarding airflow inconsistancies) with my Faultmate with the engine running and its right then for another 3 months or so. The fault initially occurred near the end of warranty but as I was able to clear it and restore performance and I didn't want to be inconvenienced by having the body removed again, nothing was done about it. However either a new actuator linkage kit or a new turbo may need to be fitted because the fault has re-occurred several times since.
I recently purchased a 2010 3.0L RRS and I experienced the restricted performance mode one Sunday morning while letting a friend have a drive. Engine was cold and he put it into sport and floored it. Engine went into restricted performance mode and showed warning on dash.
Switched car off for 5 mins and fault had cleared.
Took car to Barbagallos and they read the fault code and advised that the actuator linkage was sticking as Graeme mentioned (although I didn't notice a whine, may have missed that...) and that there was a technical bulletin on this and a new linkage was recommended for my VIN number.
Car is out of warranty so I said I'd keep an eye on it before having the linkage changed (2-3 hrs to change).
Since then I have never pushed the engine while cold but certainly give it some stick:twisted: when fully warmed up and haven't experienced again and the fault occured nearly 3mths ago.
Fingers crossed.
Cheers
Mine's problems seem to occur whilst cold on the 2km drive to my front gate but never using much throttle. There being a bulletin is encouraging as I thought it might just re-occur further down the track even if the linkage was replaced.
Hi Greg,
You have my sympathies, what a run.........As others have said, it surely sounds like a lubrication issue and more the oil than anything else, you have changed the engine and the turbo, I was going to suggest a different oil but then this will compromise the warranty if you supply an oil. Has what is happening got anything to do with the oil change interval. Maybe change the oil at 10k rather than the 15k or 20k, I'm not sure when the oil gets changed, I change my own every 10k.
I understand that you are governed by LR and the mandated service intervals, and also a warranty that in your case is something that you wouldn't want to compromise.
I would dearly like to now what the issue is, just out of curiosity. To just drop the car off and then pick it up a week later only to have it break again, whilst this is nice in that it is free, this is inconvenient.
I wish I could offer something to fix the problem..........i've got nothing.
Hi Greg
Just read your ongoing issues with the turbo. Since having mine replaced, that included one false start with the initial replacement failing before the body was replaced, it seems ok with only the occasional smoky session which disappears after the first initial burst. Barbagallo's have been great so I hope you finally get a solution
George
Hi George yes Barbagallo have good service for sure. It'll be okay, it's all under warranty anyway, just inconvenient. A bit curious though, they reckon its the primary turbo, but the whine doesn't start till it hits 2000 revs, which is when I thought the second turbo kicked in.
So here's the question...Primary or Secondary turbo (Which I believe is 2500RPM)?
I thought the problem was the Secondary not getting 'enough use'.....which is BS, just a design flaw....but anyway, a Secondary turbo issue.
Have both Secondary and Primarys been failing?
As I side, I knocked the Throttle Body off the engine...restricted mode and whined like a jet engine....so maybe a leak would produce the same noise. In fact I think I remember something about seal degredation...
Hope it all works out.
Cheers,
Kev
