3.0 V6 diesel - is this 'normal'????

The primary turbo is the same setup or perhaps even identical to the single turbo on the 2.7 and seems to suffer from the same sticking actuator malady. The secondary turbo is not variable so has no actuator.

The initial 2500 RPM cut-in of the secondary turbo was supposedly altered to start opening at much lower revs as part of the solution to the oil build-up problem. I considered that I felt the change from 2500 rpm to around 1800 rpm after my secondary turbo was replaced along with the s/w update. However I still find the management of the secondary cut-in rather rough because if the gbox is manually up-shifted with part throttle at around 2500 rpm, the engine's performance drops off significantly for quite a while until revs get back up towards 2500 rpm in the higher gear. This suggests that either the secondary turbo is being virtually closed-off when the revs drop or the primary turbo is backed-off way too far with the slightly reduced torque that is requested by the gbox ecu prior to the up-shift, but either way the dual turbo management is not particularly refined, not on my vehicle anyway. Part throttle up-shifting at 2200 rpm is quite smooth, as is at around 3000 rpm.

Kev, absolutely no question of my car getting appropriate use. Thousands of kms at high speed highway use, up and down Gibb River Rd, through creeks, along beaches etc, plus the usual around town stuff, and plenty of towing boats and camper trailers. So if that's not enough to use both turbos sufficiently, I don't know what is:-)
I can't remember whether last year Barbagallos changed both turbos (once each) or the same turbo twice. I'll ask them when they call the car in for the next round.
I guess in the end it doesn't matter. Body off three times in 18 months for serious surgery is getting a bit much. Am very tempted, when the next model arrives, to opt for the 4.4 V8 - or pick up a two year old Vogue with the 4.4 already in it. The chief tech at Barbagallos assures me it's a better engine - bigger capacity, less stressed. (No doubt heavier by a fair margin too)
Makes you wonder about the two new V6 diesels in the upcoming model. The current 3.0 diesel puts out around 180kw and 600nm. The new versions are apparently 190kw and 215kw (same torque, 600nm) - meaning, presumably, bigger fuel pumps/more turbo boost, which begs the question, even more highly stressed? Who knows.

Have both Secondary and Primarys been failing?

As I side, I knocked the Throttle Body off the engine...restricted mode and whined like a jet engine....so maybe a leak would produce the same noise. In fact I think I remember something about seal degredation...

The LR version of the 3.0 has been a cross between the 2 Jag versions - low HP from the low output engine but high torque from the high output version, so can just use the Jag high output fuelling maps.

Actually the current SDV6 is 183 for the Australian market, 190 for the EU. Or BAS remap to 215, but not via OBD II.

My MY12 D4 SE had the same high pitched whine on acceleration. Developed at <13,000km. Primary turbo replaced and the whine is gooooone.

I lived with it for a while before getting the turbo replaced. You don't realise how annoying it truly is until the sound disappears.

Yeah, I look forward to getting it fixed. It's booked in for 4 days on Monday week. I was going to do a country trip to Port Denison & back on Thursday, but a bit nervous about taking it too far out of town in case the turbo ****s itself completely while I'm away.
Can't imagine that frequent lifting the body off and bolting it back on again is doing anything positive for the integrity of seals, linkages and other potentially squeaky bits though.

Sorry to see all your continuing issues Greg, I hope it finally gets sorted for you.
How strange these things can be, mine is an early 05 model D3 and I've never had a body off experience!

Oh the reason I asked is the fact that I hadn't heard about primary turbo issues and was wondering if there was maybe just some confusion. I haven't been on the forum very much of late as I've been working away from home.

I'm up for number 3 Secondary turbo (which including the original means 4 secondary turbos)....a situation LR claim hasn't been witnessed by them (Brisbane). They recon once the new turbo is fitted, they've been good. The first turbo change was definitely like-for-like, as they hadn't discovered the design issue by then (mine being a 2009 model), but the second was supposed to have been the updated turbo and pipe. How much has this cost LR???? They should be flowing those warranty costs onto the ***** that built the turbo! :mad:

Like you Greg, there is no chance of my engine being under-used ;). I haven't heard of any of them completely crapping themselves and in my case the issue has been nothing more than a slight oil weep on all of them.

I'm worried now, as mine has always had a slight whine under 2500rpm.......:(

Yes, interesting your comments about the re-design of the turbo plumbing. Mine is a 2010 model, March 2010 build. My issues (blue/white smoke) didn't start until early in 2012, which is when the turbo was first replaced.
Yet I'm told that LR was aware of the problem pretty early in the piece and did some re-designing for post 2010 builds. If that's so, why I am still having problems with a turbo replaced less than 18 months ago...?
By the time they remove the body and replace the turbo yet again, my car must have cost LR at least $50,000 in warranty claims.

Very glad I took out that three year extended warranty.

But get this, Allianz came to the party on the turbo no questions asked....I'd have told LR to get stuffed considering the history.

It's a blight on an otherwise great record...the car has been fantastic and over three years down the track still drives like a new car .... and looks like one too (when clean ;)).
