    D3 Accessory wish list

    Hi all,
On Friday I wandered over to Opposite Lock and ARB to get some prices on various bits of gear. The wish list is:
    Winch Bar
    Winch
    Rear Wheel Carrier
    Auxiliary fuel tank
    Snorkel

Well the quotes varied by about $2000, mainly because ARB only have the Kaymar full rear bar.

But now I have a couple of questions. Opposite Lock quoted me on the Outback Accessories Rear Wheel Carrier and Auxiliary fuel tank. The tank is gravity fed rather than pump, so I know the gauge won't work until the second tank has emptied. Has anyone on here any experience with these tanks. I did search but most of the threads were a couple of years old, so I was wondering if the intervening years have changed anyone's mind.

Also does anybody have any comments about the wheel carrier?

    Thanks
    Mike

I have the fuel tank and wheel carrier you're referring to on my D4. Very happy with both.

Just watch where they run the wiring through for the additional tail light that you will need on the wheel carrier. Ask them first where they plan to bring this wiring through the body, and make sure you are happy with it before you give them the job.

I'd suggest that you ask them to drill a hole through the bracket for the wheel carrier where it sits on top of the original bumper, and bring the wiring out through that hole (close to the base of the pivot). Some installers are not as "tidy" as you would be if you did the job yourself.
    Cheers .........

I have the Long Ranger aux. tank and the Dolium wheel carrier. The Long Ranger uses a pump to transfer fuel, and has it's own led fuel gauge. Not very precise, but it does give you a good idea of how much fuel is in the tank. Long Ranger use a Y split in the filler tube, which is fiddly to fit. The gravity fed tanks are fine. I would not be concerned about their use.

The Dolium carrier looks better than the Outback carrier,( IMO ) but uses friction to hold it open, whereas the Outback carrier has a gas strut. The Outback carrier may be easier to fit ( not your problem if OL are doing it for you ) The Dolium carrier can be tricky to fit if you are not mechanically minded.

Not sure if you even get a light with the Dolium carrier. It wasn't included when I did mine a few years ago. ( and yes I had to drill a hole through the bumper panel to run the wiring for one when I fitted an extra light )

As per BMKal. Happy with both. Have a look at a few before making your decision.

I have the Dolium rear wheel carrier, very happy with it and personally I think the Dolium looks the best of the single wheel carriers.

I bet within the first week you end up with a dent in the rear top door from forgetting to swing open the carrier before trying to open the door. ...

I watched the wife do it almost straight away, gave her heaps for doing it, then did it myself the next day. ...
    Cheers,
    Terry

I'll have to watch for this as I don't normally have the arm fitted, not having a 2nd tank (yet?).

    Exactly the same here.
SWMBO also did the same on our previous duel wheel carrier on our previous car.

I'm very happy with my 4x4 Intelligence carrier! ( Pity u cant buy one anymore) The company did make the fact that the Dolium one was nowhere as strong as his. Strong enough to take a 35" tyre if you could fit these on a D3! also strong enough to use as a ladder to climb up onto my roof rack.

Yes my mate on my Simpson trip put a small dent in my tailgate trying to open the door without opening the carrier first!
Sounds like he wasn't the first or be the last to do this.

I found out all the prices on all the gear from ARB and OL and others then decided which bits I liked and wanted and which I didn't then took them to and Independent guy and asked him to match the prices which he came close to doing (I think he ended up regretting it when he ran to a few hassles but I didn't) and got a more personalised service which allowed for discussion etc and he was open to me printing tips from here and giving them to him.

Am very happy with the results and got a good deal if not a bargain, also had the advantage of being able to mix and match gear.

The only bit I am slightly unhappy with is the lack of a locking pin to hold the Wheel open on the Dolium carrier which is a slight pain if you are on an angle but fine otherwise, but other than that it is a good looking carrier which doesn't need an additional light.

I mounted a gas strut on mine and did away with the limiting mechanism on the bottom of the arm.
