Need to remove viscous fan the other day.

Made this tool from 40 X 10 mm flat bar.

    That is great.

For the fan removal, I used a 10mm spanner, a hammer and a shifter. I even had the butchers apron on for good measure. All turned out ok though.

But one of those would have made life a whole lot easier!

That one looks much prettier than the one I knocked up which has two pieces of flat bar welded in a y configuration.

    home made fan tools

Some very neat pieces of engineering out there, mine is a bit primitive.
I made this crude (but effective) fan tool from 2 pieces of flat bar, pre drilled and then ground the holes open after welding them together.

    Hole dimensions

Hi guys - looking to make up my own tool. What is the dimension between the hole centres and what diameter do the holes need to be?
    Thanks!!

    TDV6 fan pulley holder tool

You just find the right length bit of metal like a socket extension to brace against one of the small fan nuts and something solid on the engine then using a large adjustable spanner give a solid tap in reverse opposite direction to break the main fan nut free.

So high tech. A cold chisel and mallet on the edge of the nut with a sharp blow breaks the fan nut tension and it comes straight off every time.

Yep it’s the spinning of the engine that keeps it on tight against the reverse thread rather than any great torque
