What ******s me off is that I negotiated an extremely good price, happy with that.
Couldn't work out how stamp duty was calculated - seemed excessive. Eventually discovered that in Qld stamp duty is calculated on everything -recommended retail price plus rrp of all the accessories and options plus on gst plus on luxury car tax. Not necessarily what you negotiated.
Therefore you are paying stamp duty on the discount you negotiated as well as on gst and lux car tax ie paying tax on tax.
Dealer has a little bit of room to play with the numbers.
Stinks, but that's the way it is apparently.
So it's a good idea to buy all your accessories if possible separately to the car purchase. You'll save 33% lux car tax and 3.5% stamp duty on those items at least.
All up, I saved just under $10k

Yep it is the biggest rip around.

Don't know how they got it in without more complaints?

So if you negotiate on say a bar for $2k,and retail on bar is $4.5k,you pay the tax on the $4.5k.
You actually pay tax on an amount that you haven't payed.
    Then there is the LCT,GST,bla,bla

I recon many people don't really understand what they are actually paying for.

I've been negotiating on a drive away, no more to pay price which includes all government charges. In NSW if it's described as Drive Away No More To Pay that's what you pay and no more.

I'm still going to buy accessories separately if possible to avoid the luxury car tax etc.

Looking at an HSE with 700kms for $97,888 versus 1 SE with Tech pack, xenons hiline audio for $94,000, and 1 with Black Pack, xenons, rear air, rear camera and led running lights for $96,950 which the dealer will fit with steps at cost price so I don't cop the taxes.

Still negotiating but the HSE is tempting at that price as its got everything. Seems to be a good value proposition with the run out sale as well.

    Decisions, decisions

you buy your extras separately so you dont pay the lux and stamp duty taxes on those, naturaly you will be paying gst on those bits anyway. if you buy extras from the dealer it needs to be about a month later (or some such nominated time) or you get taxed on them, assuming it goes on your account, at least you are meant to be.

afaik you dont pay lux or stamp duty on a supposed RRP of an item, you pay it , only on the actual amount you forked out. e.g lux tax (33%) on everything (final total) above the gov stated number, which i think from memory is around $54K or thereabouts..if your paying tax on a supposed RRP when you actually payed less then someone, maybe the dealer is scoring some dollars off you and telling you fibs

But getting the extras later may also upset your warranty on the extra.

Example, the genuine LPG we get fitted to our work vans.If it is done before purchase through dealer,we get 3yrs warranty.

If done after delivery,we get one year warranty, exactly the same system, same installer.

There is no way around this.

GST is irrelevant as company gets it back, they are(vans) also lower than when the LCT cuts in,not like a D4.

And,yes in Qld,dunno about other states you pay stamps on the retail price of the extra, does not matter what you paid for it.Been through this before.

I am surprised the SD calc has not been legally challenged. SD is calculated in NSW on the contract (what is on the paperwork) price, not on some pie in the sky figure from the retailer.

yeah, sounds insane to me, no way in the world would i pay tax on some pretend RRP number, not to mention RRP's can change as often as the sun comes up ....banana benders should riot

they did used to try and get us like that some decades ago in SA , particularly if they didn't believe you paid a low sum for a vehicle, all you had to do was is produce a receipt and nothing they could do about it, cant charge you tax on money not paid, cant imagine it being legal..nowdays they usually take ones word for it because its a serious offence to falsify but are well within rights to ask for documentation, very expensive vehicles one usually has all paper work in order and on hand anyway

Or buy in NSW. We won't mind the extra business.
