Let's check out the web instead. So into the ether I dive and find the tyres that I am looking for are on special with a Sydney based 'On Line' firm. What's more they provide freight free transport to Perth or anywhere else in Australia according to their add. That fact along with the price of $200.00 less per tyre certainly got my focus.

There I sat thinking if its too good to be true, then it probably isn't true.

So I ring the local tyre firms that they list as agents and ask a few questions and get all the right response's. Still I am not convinced maybe the tyres are grey imports or Chinese knock offs?

Oh well nothing ventured nothing gained so I order the tyres.

They were fitted yesterday by a reputable tyre retailer in Perth that acts as a local agent for the Sydney based firm.

All up the cost, including fitting, balance and fee for tyre disposal was just on $2k a substantial $1k difference, which, from my perspective is better in my pocket than someone else's.

Call me a skeptical person but I still have a slight nagging feeling. This is despite my checks that show (as far as possible) that I wasn't being had.

I guess the proof of that will be 50,000+ kms down the track.

Anyhow the 400km trip home was a pleasurable drive with good road holding and little to no road noise.

As stated earlier, regardless of where I went in Brisbane (Bob Jane, independents, ETC), the tyres were always ~$500.


I stumbled apon a place in Archerfield who quoted me something like $280 fitted. I thought he had the wrong tyre.


After a bit of careful prodding, as I didn't want to tip him off on how cheap he was selling them, I found the reason to be the local Pirelli distributor adding a massive mark-up.


The new guy uses a Sydney importer/distributer for all his tyres and I'm assuming they import direct from Pirelli, thus cutting out another set of hands and 'wraps' (mark-ups).


You'll probably find your scenario was similar to mine and the tyres will be genuine.

I have the 19" ATR's as Cooper didn't do a 19" when it was time to replace the OEM Wranglers on my D4. They have worn very well and the car handles beautifully. Its much quieter than the Coopers I had on my D3, but they don't have as deep a tread pattern so probably wont last quite as long. I would recommend them if you want a great road tyre with good occasional off-road capability.

Sounds about right. I'm getting a set of 255 55 19's fitted tomorrow in Melbourne for $440. They are including a full alignment. I had another quote for $435 but these guys have more experience with D4's- or so I am lead to believe.

I rang around yesterday and quotes as high as 480 and 520.

Now...Just trying to find that thread that talks about pulling the fuse instead of using TTM.

Damn! You had me excited- but alas, they are 18's.
Size: P265/60R18

I have had and lived with the Pirelli ATR tyres for a smidgen over 9 months and travelled just over 30,000km in this time and this is my view of these tyres and their performance.

Most of if not nearly all my km's are country travelling with the odd trip to the big smoke to confirm my reasons for not living there. ;) I have also punted these tyres around the inland Murchison area of WA towing my 1.5t camper trailer over some very ordinary tracks.:)

I rotated my tyres yesterday and took the opportunity to take stock, carrying out measurements and looking over the tyres in detail. As things have turned out I am glad I did as it looks to me like I am up for a wheel alignment due to some uneven wear on the Left Front tyre. It seems to be wearing at a faster rate overall but especially towards the outer edge. This will be the vehicles first wheel alignment since its purchase in September 2011.

The Pirelli tyres from new had a tread depth of 10mm and given that the condemn limit is 2mm you have 8mm of useful tread. The measurements taken yesterday show that I have the following remaining tread depth:

2 x tyres at 7mm
1 x tyre at 6mm
1 x tyre at 5mm
1 x tyre at 4.5mm

The tyres have been rotated, 5 way, at around the 10,000km. So this was their third rotation. I check the tyre pressures once a week (O.K. I might have missed out on pressure check). I have been running these the tyres at the 'placard' pressure and have not noticed any real loss of pressure between checks.

This wear rate when averaged is 4.1mm overall which equals roughly 7350km per mm of wear. Given an even wear rate I would expect approximately another 28,000km before reaching the condemn limit. This would mean a total of 58,000km from these tyres!

However as you can see the tyres are not wearing evenly. It has also been my experience that tyres seem to wear faster towards the end of their life. Given these two comments I am estimating around half the calculated km's remaining as somewhat more realistic life.

This will mean that another 14,000km should be achievable. So say 44,000 km for these tyres overall. Not as much as I expected i.e. 50,000 would have been nice!

Tyre performance is the other subject I want to comment on. Remembering that we all drive our vehicles differently and have met with many different circumstances that will colour our view on how the tyres stand up to the rigours we subject them too.

Road noise is great in that there is very little! In the dry weather these tyres they are great and inspire confidence. In the wet it is another story!

Where I live we don't see many wet days per year and when we do get rain we tend to get a reasonable drop, that is, we don't tend to get drizzle that leads to very slippery conditions. That said and remembering that most of my km's are highway km's at 110km/h or around that mark, I have had a couple of 'Oh Crap' events where I felt the vehicle was not sticking to the road as it should.

I reckon I have been close to a couple of wet weather 'let go's' as I ever want to get. I have only experienced this issue with these particular tyres on this vehicle. That is not to say it is all the fault of the tyres as the road conditions do vary and heaven forbid I am not as good as The Stig!

None the less I am certainly cautious with these tyres in wet weather.

On looking at the tread of the tyres the outer or edge elements or blocks of the tyres are substantially less in depth of their groves (from new) than that of the main or centre tread area. These groves would, in my view, be those that allow water to escape via the edge of the tyre. At this point in the tyre wear they are almost non existent. I am no tyre design expert but I sure am an expert tyre user and I think this must have some bearing on their wet weather performance.

So there you have it, my personal view of the Pirelli ATR thus far.

It is fair to say I am not unhappy with these tyres but I won't being looking for another set this time around.:angel:

Please note my comparisons of the Pirelli tyres on this vehicle are made against the original Continental Cross Contact 4x4's that were on the vehicle from new and then the Cooper LTZ's that were my second set of tyres.

Anyhow these search for some new rubber will commence shortly! Maybe I will try the Hankooks next.

I have the Pirelli Scorpions on my D3 (18 inch) and have about 25,000kms on them.

As always tyre opinions are highly subjective but my views on the tyre are very positive for general highway and city driving. Quiet and wearing well. I have driven a few other D3's on other brand tyres and they were all noisier to my ears.

If highway was all I was doing I wouldn't hesitate to get another set. Throw in some off-roading and touring though and I would lean toward the Bridgestone D697's or Mickey Thompson STZ's.

$290 in Sydney is an amazing price - nowhere in Perth can get near that - have managed to get a measly $20 off through shopping around!!

Have also heard good things about the Cooper ATR3 so may look at them as well. Have had the straight ATRs in the past and had 80k out of them, but not great cornering in the wet!

Hi Darren. I blew a General Grabber and had another almost roadworthy due to a nice long drive and wheel alignment in QLD over Xmas. Could not find an GGs within several hundred km so put 4 new Pirelli Scorpions on my D3 (18 inch). Much quieter than the General Grabbers. Cost was more than the Sydney or tyre rack price - DOH
I think the Pirelli are fine on road and on Sand they should be fine with pressures down. I put 17inch MTs on for the mud or mountains here. Only about 3000km on them so cannot comment about tyre life
