Hi LGM. Totally agree with your assessment. We have done approx. 30,000 km on our current set being a mixture of town, country and dirt roads. Have found them satisfactory in these conditions however like yourself have had a number of 'frights' in wet conditions on tarmac. On each occasion saved by the electronics, actually the only time I have heard or felt them on tarmac. Agree I will also be doing some more research before fitting new boots.
Well into my second set of Scorpions 255/55/R19 and am very happy with them on my D4 towing a 3t off-road van. They are good on sealed and equally so on gravel and so on, including sharp stones & rocks. I have become very confident in them on unmade or rough roads with suitable pressures and speed. Changed over my last set at 50,000k. would have been OK for sealed but I wanted more tread for an extended trip on unsealed.

ATR's have great dry grip and very quiet but have also just had a very scary moment in the wet with 3 ton van on back at 100km/h. So will look to replace them soon. Also have never been happy with ride of car after fitting them.
In my last 'little' ramble I talked about my experience with the Pirelli ATR (255/55/19) tyres and indicated that I could potentially get another 14000km's off them prior to replacement. Well the 'R' day has come and I am going to shed the ATR's for some Hankook ATM's and give them a go. I measured the tyre tread depths on the Pirelli's this morning and the following is the outcome:
RR 3.5mm
LR 4.0mm
RF 3.5mm
LF 4.0mm
Given the condemn limit of 2mm I am as close as I want to get.
The total km achieved on these tyres at replacement today will be approx. 43,400 which is a bit less than I had hoped for. My comments in my previous post re performance of these tyres still stands true and in fact in the wet (we have had a bit of rain) if anything they have gotten a little worse as the tread depth faded. I guess that is only to be expected.
Of interest in my casting around for tyre prices I have managed to arrange the Hankooks to be supplied and fitted in my local regional centre for less than that quoted by two other tyre dealers in Perth!:D
Note: My regional centre of Geraldton is roughly 400km from Perth and the locals don't miss you on the freight costs.

IIRC, the minimum tread depth for tyres was 1.6mm (1/16"). Has this changed? If not, you have a min. of 1.9 tread left.
I do realise, however, that a no. of people say that the performance of ATRs deteriorates with wear.
I have posted this before somewhere but after 2 sets of Pirelli ATRs and the worst wet weather experience in 35 years of motoring I now wont use them. Driving on a highway at 90Kh with no steering is not what I want to experience again.
I am now onto my 3rd set of Hankook DynaPro ATM. I specified them as the only tyre I would have on the car when I recently purchased a new My15 Discovery. They wear well, are quite, are cheaper (I would buy them if they were more expensive than the Pirelli) and they hang on better in the wet.
We towed a 3.5 tone caravan around Australia with them without one puncture.

The official minimum tyre depth in WA is 1.5mm.
That said measuring 0.5 increments of a mm when you are roadside, in the rain and at night discussing the fitness or otherwise of your tyres with the local constabulary is not something I want to contemplate hence I choose to use 2mm as the minimum.:p i.e. I have some margin for error.
Anyhow the new tyres are on the D4 and all is good again!
