Cool Stranded at the drive in ..... In my D4

This will sound like a classic 'first world' problem but here goes.....

Took the family recently to a drive in movie in my 9 month old D4. (Yes they do still have them)

Sound at the drive in is provided by a FM radio channel played through the car. The first problem encountered was the D4's audio/entertainment system cutting out every 10 minutes to protect the battery......not a big issue but annoying during a movie.

An hour into the movie, the audio/entertainment system advised it would shut down with three minutes to protect enough power to start the engine.

Needless to say we watched the last part of the movie without sound.

Then, after all that.....the engine would not start and I needed to acquire a jump start from a friendly movie goer to make it home.

Has anyone else had this issue and any solutions to any of these issues appreciated.

Not being a D4 owner I can't comment from experience but this sounds strange to me. Either the sound system uses a heap of current or the battery is faulty. But it's a new D4 so it could be anything. Could it be the alternator? TDV6 or V8?. I'd be checking these first.

If the radio is on the computer is active with a high current draw. A well documented issue.
Its an issue with many late model cars including my BMW X5.
You may need an old Holden to go to the drive in Ha Ha!

This in my experience is quite normal and you ignored the car's advice and paid the price.

A typical scenario could be that the battery was down a little - maybe lots of short trips or working on the car with lights on, doors open and radio on - whatever - something has has cause the battery to be a little low.

At the Drive-in - no doubt internal lights on, radio on etc etc and the radio does take a bit of power - when the battery gets critical the message pops up on the radio - this is the time to deal with it - engine on to charge up or something alternative. Continuing on to use power form the battery had the eventual result.

The real culprit would have been the vehicle's use prior to going to the flicks where the battery drained down.

Most unlikely to be any issue with the charging systems. However if the message does pop up regularly then I would look at the system.

With my RRS the message comes up on the radio, if I ignore that the next phase in the protection process is that the radio will come on but there is no sound but the car will start (after starting it takes about 15min of charging before I get sound back on the radio) - if that is ignored then a jump start is needed. I have had the earlier stages a few times in my 3 years of ownership but only got the no start position when I was changing and testing front lights where they were on hi beam a lot.

So I would ignore at the moment - in future act on the messages but if the problem continues get it chacked.

If the battery were not already low, would the radio stay on? Or do the electrics shut down every 10 mins regardless if the engine isn't running? Cheers.

There's a cool one at Yatala, just south of Brisbane. Has the retro window speakers as well. 😊

Next time (if there is a next time) consider a battery portable FM Radio.
I had a Jag a few years ago that did the same thing,if the engine was not running the radio would shut down about every 10 mins, regardless of the state of the battery.
    Cheers
