    D3 TDV6 Turbo whistle

Reaching out to TDV6 Disco experts here! So anyone with help or info please comment

I have had the whistle my D3 was creating checked out by the workshop and they have confirmed my fear. The turbo has developed a high pitched whistle, basically just a wear and tear issue, damaged compressor fins or something associated.

At first I thought it could be a pulley or the air con compressor, then i got onto the idea of the variable vein actuator in the turbo not opening or closing properly.
Turns out it is just turbo noise.

    So my question is:
Has anyone replaced a turbo themselves? body off job?
What replacement price am I looking at? Anyone paid to have the work done, what did it set them back?
Also what about high flowing, anyone gone down this route, I mean if it's got to be replaced why not get some more oomph..?

Done a few turbos myself , usually body off job, but the last one with body on actually took longer to do! Bigger turbo fitted one once and had to pull it off and replace with standard as engine computer kept throwing faults as it was out of parameters. Anymore info you may need just let me know.

Great advice! Standard replacement it will have to be.
Do you know the actual turbo model/code?

    Cheers,
    Ben

Check the condition of your rubber turbo hoses first - they can get a small hole and whistle and is relatively common.

Are we talking a dentist drill type noise/siren noise here?

A whistle is normal with any turbo car??

The TDV6 I find has quite a loud turbo for a stock vehicle.

All hoses I can get to check out, and I have replaced the main intake hose with silicone. Would I be missing any hoses to check? what about inter-cooler, are they prone to leaking? Alto gave the diagnosis of it being the turbo.

Very very high pitched noise, almost deafening with the windows open on the highway, at it's highest pitch at full boost around 3grand. And not the 'good' turbo whistle like a big bore truck or T66 hanging off a ported 13b.

Similar noise to one of my previous performance cars when I had damaged compressor fins and loose roller bearing.

If you need to replace it, as others have said, it is a body off job most times - it might be an idea to compile a list of other things to do while the body is off, ie, rear HPFP belt or any tricky hoses?

The body is removed from the chassis - not as bad as it sounds as it is designed for this - not a technically difficult job and not all that time consuming.

    Yeah good call Rich.

I'll be leaving it alone for now, I will go over all the hoses and check the inter-cooler for leaks.

No noise through the intake via the snorkel, other than normal boost up/down noise, which leads me to it not actually coming from inside the turbo but a leak somewhere.

I think the guys at Alto just drove it and said, yeah it's the turbo. Great, what part!

    6 grand quoted to replace.
