    Why should I swap my D2 for a D4

    Hi there all,
My D2 is up to 300,000klcs and I still love it. BUT perhaps it's time to move on.
Given that I'll get little for my D2, are there real reasons to upmarket to a good, still in warranty, etc D4.
Would want the big diesel and just 5 seats.
May I have your opinions please. And places to buy one--- given I live in Widgee outside Gympie God's Country Queensland!!!!!

    Thanks

They are like comparing chalk with cheese, 20th century compared with the 21st, one drive will tell you

I have both; a late 2004 Td5 and a 2008 D3 TDV6 SE - as mentioned below they're barely even comparable apart from the manufacturer's name. While I used to love the D2 as my daily drive, the D3 makes it feel like a farm tractor.

...and I won't even start on the improvement as a tow vehicle.

Mate if you tell us what you are using for, especially off road, but also whether you like using roof racks or would prefer not to, size of family, what you tow if anthing (eg hammer to crack a wallnut if you are towing 2 tonn or less that the d2 does very well) and how long you want to hold onto a d4 for it might help.

We replaced the Wife's D1 with a D3. She uses it for dragging a horse float. Sometimes.

If you consider the improvement of the D2 over the D1 as similar to the D4 over the D3 (refinement more than substantial upgrade) its a valid comparison.

She absolutely adores the D3, she cannot believe how smooth and comfortable it is. Whereas the D1 was on the noisy side (which, to be fair you only really notice when you drive something quiet). You will arrive at your destination less fatigued and much more relaxed.

Our D2 had 320,000ks on it when we changed to a D4, as has been said, there's no comparison, the D4 does all the D2 did but so much better and easier by a country mile, on and offroad.

I loved my D2 and strangely, I miss it also, but the D4 is an amzing vehicle, take one for a drive, you'll understand then

Ooh, tricky - I always remember one of my old MD's saying that "if you're thinking about moving to another job then you've already made your mind up to go.."

I've just gone from D2 TD5 into a D3 V8 and I my wife and myself REALLY enjoy driving the D3, wheras in the D2, although it did it's job, I was always thinking that things could be a little better (quieter, more legroom, more intelligent gearbox etc) The D2 was good for its time but after having a newer car beforehand it felt a few generations old. The D3/4 is just a whole league better.

If you think you don't want to change don't test a D4 - it'll be a one way street if you do!

I would say his mind is made up. There is a lot to this though. There is also the option of building up a mud puppy from a car that owes you nothing and looking at a nice sedan or wagon rather than a large truck for touring. It sounds as though you might be looking for someone to tell you not to get it....thats not going to happen here! I will hold my tongue about comments above about the d4 being better off road because there is a few different interpretations about what better actually means but the d4 is a lovely vehicle. Sell.the d2 to an enthusiast and move to the new one mate. If you are considering seriously the new one then you dont love the old one so the decision is pretty easy.

On a trip last weekend to Vic High Country, a very nice D2 with 35's, very cool sounding V8 exhaust, lift, etc got stuck on a steep climb. No CDL in that D2 (not sure if all D2 were missing them). It also had a problem with the air compressor for lockers... so it became a one wheel drive. It had to back out of that climb and head on an easy route. Two D4s and two Deefers made it through with no problems.

Mate how does that assist....no CDL...no locker....even if he had the locker 'working' CDL makes it largely worthless. On steep scrabbles CDL is absolutely essential for making it look easy. These light but strong trucks respond very well to small mods at quite low cost, but it has to be done properly. They are 100 inch wheelbase, live axle and excellent off road. The D4 is excellent off road. The OP can search about the endless debate on these boards about D2 v later models and Deefers etc and I will not add to them here, but I cannot help but comment on your post...

    Cheers
