    Project permagrin

Look what arrived in my carport a couple of days ago!

Bought it from an auction place. 07 HSE with 4.4 l V8. And a few ouchies!

I took a risk as it was a bit of a 'pig in a poke'. Because of a totally flat battery there was no odometer read out so I didn't know how many kms it had done. Plus you never know what you find until you start looking!

Once a battery was hooked up I found the kms was 121 000. Which is pretty good! I inadvertently went too far with the key - I wasn't planning to start it straight away - and it started instantly and idled sweetly.

    The issues are:

Right rear suspension is almost torn off. It must have hit something hard, but it is very hard to work out what happened. There is virtually no body damage other than the quarter panel above and the broken rear window. I have ordered a complete suspension corner to replace it. The local LR specialist says that it is quite straightforward to fix. Largely bolt off/ bolt on. They will do the final alignment checks for me.

Right rear quarter panel and broken window. This I will leave to the professionals. I don't think it is anything major. There is also a small dent in the door which I think for now I will ignore.

Left front lower control arm is bent. On the advice of the parts supplier I will be replacing it with a new one and doing the other side as well.

Broken glass for the driver's side mirror.

And that seems to be about it!

I'll let you know how it goes.

I am very intrigued by what happened to the car. How did it get such major damage to a suspension and hardly any body damage? I would love to discuss this with the previous owner. Does anybody know who owned this before? Perhaps it is someone on the forum? From some receipts I found in the car they could possibly be from the Sunbury area north west of Melbourne? If he/ she is happy to chat my number is 0433 122 798

Thanks for the link. Good to read about that problem. I will be carefully inspecting that part before I put the new bit in.

This is a different problem. That bolt on my car is still good.

Does anyone have the links to the repair service manual for D3s? Or know where I can buy one? Are the ones on a CD on eBay any good?

    Thanks

    G'day Justin,

Thanks for saying g'day to Adrian! G'day bro!

Yes, it was a good buy and it should not be too hard to do. It's not a picnic getting bits off, though. When things are bent and twisted everything is under tension and bolts are tight and don't want to move! I think I'll get the hacksaw out! I'd use the oxy if I had one.

As you go you find more things. The handbrake cable is damaged and it needs to be replaced. But that's part of the electric park brake and is part of a complete unit that costs $1100! I can get a used one for half that but as they are a consumable and do need to be replaced eventually I wonder whether it would be wise.

We shall carry on and get there.

    Workshop manual
Land Rover Workshop Manuals > LR3/Disco 3 > General Service Information

I've seen plenty of cars drift sideways into curbs and end up looking like that, except normally the wheel is folded under the car.

Thanks for the link, Rich. Much appreciated.

I'm beginning to think it has gone over a really rocky area and then fallen over with the wheel caught.some of the damage underbody - not that there's a lot, just scrapes, etc - indicates this. But very hard to tell.
