Suddenly the motor is very loud. An almost roaring whine.
No idea why!!! It has not been touched.

Our D4 does it also(same engine) although not as bad as the D3 or our old TD5

Thanks for the replies gentlemen, but it does not diminish as the motor warms. It only occurs under positive throttle, or coasting downhill.
The fan is actually electric, not viscous..At first start when cold, under acceleration it will roar, then drop off and only come on when needed.
Could be a fault with the ECU causing it to be on all the time.

Is it electric? I was sure it was viscous. I'll have a look in the morning.
The Manual describes it as follows in the cooling specification section:
"Engine driven, viscous coupled with electronic control"

Money would be on the Alternator on its way out.
Lower voltage makes the fan run constantly. Easily misdiagnosed until the alternator gives up

Took the bash plates off for a look. Found what appears to be a new leak from the intercooler connecting hoses. Don't know if this is significant or even relevant. Tightened up the clamps
Couldn't see anything else, and couldn't locate the source of the roar, but it didn't seem as loud today.
