    D3 Fixes It's Self?

About 2 months ago my EPB locked on with a great deal of horrible noises. I did the emergency release thing & was able to drive but had a flashing P light on the dash & continual Park Brake warnings in the message centre so just didn't use it. If I forgot & tried to I just got more messages that it was U.S.
Yesterday I drove up to our gate, about 1 k from the house, & stopped, put it in Park to open the gate, as I was opening the gate the car started making all sorts of horrible noise over & over. As I ran back to the car it made a normal applying the EPB type sound & all other noise ceased.
I got into the car & the EPB was on? The dash light was on steady, I released the EPB with the switch, light went off, heard the brake release & all is absolutely normal? Went through the messages & no more EPB error messages?
    How weird is that?
Until I got back in the car I had not touched the EPB switch.
It would seem that the D3 has decided I was not going to drive her to Cairns to have the EPB fixed so fixed it herself.
I did a couple of On/Off EPB tests & it appears & sounds like it's working normally.
    I'm Amazed!

I would say it still needs looking at, from what you have said, considering where you are, I reckon it's probably only dirt or crap in the drums, we had a similar thing, they were just dirty and full of mud, have a look yourself, it's a pretty easy job to do, clean it all out and re-assemble, should be fine then.

Mine healed itself too but in a different way. I tried to use it a few days ago and was surprised to find that the switch lever wouldn't raise enough to operate the switch. This morning I removed the centre console so as to remove the switch then discovered the switch now worked. I suspect an object had found its way under the lever then fell out when the console was up-ended. I like to keep mine's quirks simple.

The EPB gods must be smiling

My EPB also had a miraculous healing yesterday. Mine stopped working about a week ago, after a failed bedding in procedure after installing new rotors, and now it works normally

How to fix EPB in 3 steps.

    1. Rip out all EPB and associated parts.
    2. Fit 2 bricks into drivers footwell. Apply to wheels when stopped.
    3. Profit.

It would be good if one of the clever guys around here could come up with a manual alternative, rather than paying nearly $2000 to get it fixed.

For those with 2010 model D4's, there is a different part number than for the later cars and the car won't accept the later part number, even though it is identical to the old part. Rovertech installed mine, with great difficulty because they had to remove the long range fuel tank. However, the computer would not accept it and it ended up taking a couple of weeks to get the correct part.

The worst thing was that the car was OK with the wrong part until my wife drove the car away from the repair shop. Soon after leaving and after refuelling, the engine stalled with a low fuel error on the dashboard and the gauge reading empty. It would start but died as soon as you touched the acclerator. This was 4:30 on a Friday afternoon and we were about to leave for Esperance at about 6:00pm. Kevin sent out a mechanic who checked the fuel bleed and put the Testbook on it. Everything was OK except that there was a persistent low fuel error, even though the fuel rail pressures were OK.

Trucked it back to Rovertech and when the new EPB finally arrived and was accepted by the computer, all errors disappeared and no problems with the gauge reading empty or the low fuel error message since. Seems like errors must have been generated every time the engine was started and when they reached a critical mass the car went into melt down!

To Rovertech's credit, the new EPB was a warranty job. They had to remove the LR tank and do all of the fitting again at their own cost. The supplier didn't know that there were two different part numbers for D4's and everyone got caught out.

Sounds about right for a modern car. Just replaced the engine and wiring harness in the wifes xtrail. So had to replace the ignition and locks too, it would start but not rev on the old locks. Change locks, all ok.

The later EPB module s/w must have been issuing CAN messages identical to the 2010 fuel level message issued by the CJB and used by various other ecus - a nice little trap for the future. I wonder why LR didn't update all ecu s/w to obviously new CAN messages.

Rovertech didn't know why the EPB module would cause the problem but at the time it was the only explanation as to why the car would report low fuel when it was just filled up. Sure enough, we were all proven correct but Graeme's explanation makes it a bit clearer what must have happened. Just remember it for your car, Graeme! The car is fine with a faulty EPB as long as you don't use it (the EPB that is not the car) but it won't go at all with the wrong version of EPB.

One problem will be that the 2010 version of EPB will probably become rare or not available or something and then we will need Graeme to come up with a device to trick the computers into accepting the wrong part.
