Adding extra oil cooler for d4 transmission

Has anyone had a extra transmission cooler fitted to the Discovery 4 if so the cost? I'm trying to find a part number or brand of cooler, no one seems to know. Also a price on the ZF transmission oil per litre.. was quoted today at $90/L

Then the steel pan, it seems on ebay you can buy a ZF6hp26 for $215 will this fit a ZF6hp28?

    Cheers

    No additional cooler necessary.

Plenty of users towing at max rating without any issues.

My transmission specialist thinks that an extra cooler would be a waste of time. The cooling capacity of the OE cooler is sufficient and an added cooler would not provide value for money or much extra cooling capacity.

    Hi Glenn
We tow a 2300kg van with our 2010 2.7l D4 and were told by the independent MR Automotive in Brisbane that they recommend anyone towing over 2000kg should fit a heavy duty oil transmission cooler. We were quoted $900 for the cooler installed. I contacted our dealer for a price and they don’t have anything available.

At this stage we haven’t done anything about it and probably won’t as nobody else on the forum seems to feel it is necessary.

MR also recommend changing the transmission oil every 40k if towing and quoted $900 for the service, which also includes the steel pan. We have now done 44k and had them check the oil which still looks ok. We will probably do it at the next service at 48k though just to be safe.

    Regards
    Chris

    Hi Glenn,
I've heard the main benefit from having an add-on cooler comes from bypassing the factory one - which shares the same plastic body as the radiator. Some have reported (on disco3.co.uk) cracks in radiator causing coolant to mix in with the ATF, requiring an automatic gearbox rebuild.

Pretty sure DPL do this job.

Thank you all for your comments, thinking i'll just go with the service minus the cooler.

Davis performance Landies do this if memory serves it is around 1k. Most others told me not to bother so I didn't. I rarely tow. more than 1.5 tonne.
